I'll give some classifications to help uncover some underlying themes...
Malcolm Wilson, John Buffum, Pat Richard, Rod and Rhys, Tommi Makinen, JVL, and lightly Tim O'Neil
Tommi Makinen, Higgins, Tim O'Neil
Tanner Foust, Ken Block and lightly JVL
Fixed it for you Grant, and brought it a bit closer to home.
Looking at your reasons for the grouping, JVL arguably fits the last grouping since he created a market for Volvo, Xratty parts he produces by (correctly) pushing the idea of simple, strong rally cars.

So is this the brother of the guy who was selling the Focus for too much?

I'd pay $25 for the guy to put "Dick Cheese" on his hood.

I'm glad they started the STRP facebook page. Wouldn't want to get it confused with the STPR page.

Did you hear about the dyslexic bluesman who went down to the crossroads and sold his soul to Santa?

I really want to go to STPR now just to beat these guys (I'm guessing it shouldn't be hard).

There's always an option to retract the entry because of an unfinished car. Although I can see him going there with a car half finished missing skid plate and the likes, just to be bragging to all his mates feeling and 7 foot tall. We all know what will happen right after the start crew says 'go'.

Here's his facebook http://www.facebook.com/#!/jcr57rt where we can see the "extenssive racing experience".
