So I really don't understand all the crap this guy is getting on this forum. So he is a little naive about who sponsorship works and he comes across badly in his ebay / craigslist add. But he is a new competitor building a new car for a sport that desperately needs more people involved.
Rather trying to put something derogatory on his car you should be offering to help him finish his car and get to his first event. But I guess I would rather see more people going to more events, myself included, maybe I am in the minority. |

On one hand I want to make fun, on the other hand he's probably just an excited kid that wants to come race... so I have a hard time ragging on that.
Never met him in person though so he could be a decent guy just doesnt really understand the way things work yet. Or he could prove to be a giant douche.... i'll reserve judgement till then but I bet he's just excited. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/17/2012 07:40AM by czwalga. |

The whole reason that he's getting flamed is because of the way he's portraying himself and his team. As some sort of experienced professionals that can get you loads of ROI by just putting your name of a rally car. As if that is supposed to be an act of congress otherwise. All that's going to do is damage the image rally has in the US even more, by poorly presenting himself and inadequately representing whatever sorry brand would give them sponsorhip. Note that he presents no other form of return on investment than that of a "name on a rally car" being watched by all the spectators and the HUGE fan base, and the LIVE broadcast for millions to watch across the world. Yeah that will increase my sales at the end of the month or even end of the year!
Now if the guy came on with a help me approach and outlook it would be different than the "The difference with our team is we have the background history of racing so we are not new to the racing sport." Oh and another reason is because this forums is called Rally Anarchy. So we're supposed to be decadent, immoral, dissolute and downright nasty. ![]() |

You know that Spalind guy on the other forum? Same reason. You can't honestly be defending someone who can't even get the abbreviation STPR in the right order? As other's have said, people see this and go "damn racing punks, what idiots" and then apply that opinion to anyone else who ever has sought sponsorship, even in a more legitimate/well thought out manner. 1st impressions are important, and honestly, a mature adult with a LICK of sense could come up with a better EBay ad than that. The ad itself speaks volumes about the individuals who wrote it up, and to be so incredibely naive about sponsorship (and racing in general), well... |

naw I think some of the razzing is embarrassment. It's like "How have we failed so badly in making available solid sensible info that this schmuck could be so deluded?, He must be a ________" Only thing of possible value could be to dissect the plan and try to see where the person went so far wrong....what BS did he read or was fed that would make him think there is going to be a worthwhile reason to give him money so he can crawl around in near last place? But I've heard variations on this forever..."Big PLANs" before they have begun to search for their Vega (really one guy's plan was a Vega, in 1985, that was going to be the secret to getting BIG DOLLARS) or ___________ fill in the blank with whatever derelict shit they had laying around for free. I thought Rally Anarchy was a place for the Proletariat; a place where we - the polar opposite of the "decadent, immoral, dissolute and downright nasty" - could discuss our ragamuffin motorsport aspirations without the boot of the Bourgeoisie coming down upon us. Please, sir, may I have another?
To me, Rally Anarchy is about the love of the sport and the camaraderie more than it is about the glamour and prestige of national championships and getting our faces in front of the impressionable, young flatbrims, agape in front of their computer screens. It's frustrating for me to see someone who can clearly afford to build a $40,000 race car to go play in he woods doing such a poor job of raising funds to offset his out-of-pocket expenses, but until such time as I'm prepared to show up at the event and compete, I really don't think I'm in any place to talk shit. Why do we hate this guy so much? Is it because he makes us look bad, over-promising and under-delivering on rally sponsorship? Or is it because he's seemingly clueless (dumb) or callously calculating (evil), yet has $40k to throw into a brand new, no expense-spared rally car? Dan's actually a good guy, once you get to know him. One thing a lot of people in the rally community seem to do quite poorly is market their efforts. He's out there in factory colors, with a vehicle he believes in, and which aligns with his other automotive pursuits. He runs a couple ads in his RSS feed (which maybe pay for a single tank of fuel per year), and he's a pariah. Brian Driggs | KG7KCA | PHX, AZ | 89 Pajero alterius non sit qui suus esse potest |

As I've said elsewhere, I don't fault Dan as a human being. I'm sure he's a nice guy, and his truck is pretty cool. He just does an extremely poor job on the interwebs (part of the marketing shpeel you speak of) in my opinion. I'm sure it's not intentional on his part. I swear I'm a good guy when you get to know me... naw, I really am an asshole in real life ![]() |

blame it on the XGames. Matt Johnson did the same thing....put up an ad on Ebay for a sponsor/full vinyl advert on his rally car for the Xgames. If I remember correctly, he had a full frontal image of some guy named Chat on his car for the whole weekend. Of course, FIRST, Matt got his confirmed entry into Xgames, but still.....not a bad idea that was. Charles at safedrives did something similar looking for a 'paying' co-driver.....I don't think anyone bit, but he probably could have if he did a little more avertising of the ebay ad itself. Again, not a bad idea if you want to run an event cheaply, espeically if the speeds are relatively low and you've run the event several times (like, say....Gorman, or whatever) edit: found it: ![]() Jon Burke - KI6LSW Blog: http://psgrallywrx.blogspot.com/ Edited 2 time(s). Trying for other peoples money is trying for other peoples money.
People use it for buying houses, investing, gambling, drugs, so why not racing? Let them do as they want. Even someone who doesn't know rally shouldn't have a hard time going "Wait... you've never done this before? Ever? And I should give you money why?" I think its weird that people think you should have to qualify to try to use other peoples money. If you can get it, why not use it? Welcome to the cult of JVL drink the koolaid or be banned. |

Chad is crew chief for Jimmy Johnson. Other teams were pissed off that MJ was undercutting the dollars in his search for sponsors. In the end, he got a phone call from Jimmy Johnson who sponsored the hood himself. Then Matthew used that (which would in itself generate publicity with NASCAR crowd), to sell Nitro Circus the sides of the car. Grant Hughes |
