Chad is crew chief for Jimmy Johnson. Other teams were pissed off that MJ was undercutting the dollars in his search for sponsors. In the end, he got a phone call from Jimmy Johnson who sponsored the hood himself. Then Matthew used that (which would in itself generate publicity with NASCAR crowd), to sell Nitro Circus the sides of the car.

I thought the car had Chad on the sides and was told by the promotors that he had to cover him up so he plastered it with Nitro Circus stickers.

What do you mean he was undercutting sponsorship costs? Undercutting what?

Meaning any other company sponsoring an X-games car should've been paying whatever MJs auction ended for, rather than the millions that other people might've been telling their sponsors.

As an aside, 7 OL entries already with a few more yet to enter. Class is getting a lot bigger.

Self written press releases always get a laugh from me. Maybe I should make some "getting read to run STPR" press release so it bumps his off the front page.

I'll thank my sponsors, stuff like my lord and savior wafflehouse hashbrowns...

Yeah, I should right one for myself. "Coming back to STPR after last year where I blew my engine 4 miles into the 1st stage of my first ever rally, I'm looking for a solid 7th place out of 12 cars in my class. Really hoping to crack the top 30 OA."

For the most part i'm like whatever, but saying Duplessis needs competition is just laughable... You could cut both of duplessis rear tires at the beginning of each stage and he still wouldnt stand a chance against him.

Matt Johnson did the same thing....put up an ad on Ebay for a sponsor/full vinyl advert on his rally car for the Xgames. If I remember correctly, he had a full frontal image of some guy named Chat on his car for the whole weekend.

Of course, FIRST, Matt got his confirmed entry into Xgames, but still.....not a bad idea that was.

Got his confirmed entry BY DRIVING, making it not at all the same thing.

Your press release is totally wrong, being truthful and actually saying your true position out of how many entries.

The joke I find about a press release, and I'll use yours as an example of how to turn a bad result good...

After facing hardship last year losing an engine on a promissing first leg, Herp Derp Rallysport is looking to come back strong this year at STPR. "I really feel this year is a redemption year and the other guys should look out now that we've fixed our problem from last year," says the team's driver Steve Czwalga. "We're really pressing for a top 10 finish this year, just get more time in a car and step up the pace as we go along."

Notice, the top 10 is thrown out there where you mean top 10 G2 but people will think top 10 overall. Never mention the numbers in your class either unless there are closer to 20 entries and you're well over the 50% mark in finish position. Nothing like saying a "2nd place in class" when you were 1 of 2 guys in class!

I could probably make champagne out of lemons on my bad race results with a selective truth press release leaving out some key facts. Maybe I should join up on the self-made press release crowd before and after all my events? In fact, I should do some with the sole purpose of them being tongue-in-cheek humor and mocking other releases.

That was Andy Bell in a speedo on the side of MJ's car I believe. Might have been someone else, but it was one of the Nitro Circus guys anyhow.

And yeah, undercutting. Offering a product for much lower than the competition. Though I doubt that ACTUALLY had any effect on the other competitors or how many of the other teams sponsors saw it and said, why are we paying him $20k when we can get MJ for $2k.

But Matt showed up in an outdated body style car that wasn't purpose built. Also it's the drivers recognition as well. Go to your local Wal-Mart and ask them if they know who Travis Pastrana is and then ask if they know Matt Johnson... Sure, you can get your sponsorship cheaper, but you won't get that association with a popular name.

Pretty sure it was people that MJ regularly beat on stages that were complaining.
He at least made it onto the actual show even if he just broke right away.
Then the van broke down. We ended up stuck in LA for almost two weeks because of that. Sucked. Though pushing a box van and two car trailer around the streets and at the Home Depot Center with Matthew in a Magnum and me steering the van/trailer was pretty fun. Security guard at gates, I yell out window, "sorry, can't stop. Sorry!" As I take out a whole line of cones designed to direct traffic and way too tight for a E450 box and 48 foot trailer.

Commission based!!! 10% of 0 is still 0 but you'll get some cool press releases!

On topic, you'd think no one here was ever young or never had this same delusion of sponsorship. I know Scott Crouch was very nice to me when I was 23 and went into Flatirons with a sponsorship packet for a 3 car team consisting of a 1984 Colt, a PGT 2.2 Impreza and a Eagle Talon selling pretty much nothing but the exposure and that we'd already had 3 magazine appearances.

I never did... I talked to guys who told me what I needed to do to get paid Start Money....they said "Give yourself 10 years......." And for condition, strength and wind "reckon with about 4 years" (of constant, no serious leg injury years.. took 9 years)(and lots of injuries then, lots of operations 35 years later repairing shit flat worn out back then)

I was surprised when anybody gave me a deal (Husqvarna later sold me parts at their production cost. KTM France did the same, later Husqvarna France did too.. some parts were 1/10 retail...

Only one name on the shirt till they did a deal.

You did realize 2/3rds of your team wasn't a subaru, right? Youse a math guy, right?

I haven't figured out the secrets of having someone write me a check, but I do know if you find the right shops and there are good tie-ins, getting sizeable discounts can be done with some good results and willingness to promote those companies, and entering "interesting" events doesn't hurt too.

Is it a better return to go get a 2nd job...probably...and at least that $$ would be considered a sure thing.
