Good news for Olympus Rally?
April 04, 2012 02:49PM
http://rally-america.com/events/2012/OLYMPUS/news/bulletins/1129/

These roads were last used before my rally days. Are these roads the knees o' the bees as the rally america PR spin proclaims? Or will I just miss brooklyn and friends?

Does this mean we can have Doo Wop back?? (He asked, already knowing the sad sad answer)

ZOMG! I raced at this event in 2007 as my first event ever competing. INSANE ROADS, in my mind, quite possibly the BEST rally I have ever competed in (having done around 15 unique rallies I believe)... these are not roads to be missed!

And considering the date change to the fall for Olympus, I may have to see if I can afford a trip down. I'd even think about skipping Mountain Trials to be able to do this event. Those are rally roads if I ever saw/drove on them grinning smiley

These roads are different from Doo Wops- You WILL miss Brooklyn, but you will also get to meet Nahwatzel and I think you will be happy. In the past, there have been 25+ (maybe 34 mile?) versions of the Nahwatzel stage. It is challenging and fun. There are also other great stage roads... I need to review some of my videos to recall names, but you will not be disappointed.

The route hasn't been finalized. Not sure what stages we'll be using. They can't be near water . Quite a few choices looking at the map they provided. It'll be very nice to get back on those roads again.

DooWops could return..just needs an organizer.

Really, really have recognize the persistance and undying hope of Steve McQuaid and a couple of others for this to happen. I gave up a long time ago to be honest.

It's not often in life where we get a second chance of this magnitude. Anyone who doesn't get their shit together and make this event should take up making rhinestone flower pots or some other worthless hobby.

Gene, what was the reason for moving away from these roads? I never really found the "why" for it, I just remember 2008 basically being a drag race from start to finish (iirc)...

Sweet, I'm hoping to do Olympus this year...

Actually hoping to do it as the tail end of my honeymoon.

a week in hawaii and fly back to a rally? not to mention marrying a girl who thinks flying back to a rally is a good idea? AWESOME thumbs up smiley

and they are getting back to epic roads? sounds win win win to me!

anyone know what time the rally usually finishes on sunday? I'm guessing i'm gonna need the following monday off of work for the drive home..

oh and i need to find a buddy/crew member who would drive the tow rig / rally car up to Washington for me... hehehe

Basically it started with Mother Nature giving us a hard freeze and thaw just before the event. This put constraints on the road use because of soggy roads and run off. Then someone pissed off the landowner needlessly and we got the boot. We never had any issues previously with Green Diamond and hopefully the bridges will be mended and last for years to come. Ego versus ecology so to speak.

Any relationship can be damaged with small effort some times. Using roads, facilities, communities for rally is a gift not a right. We always need to be on our best behavior and thankful. Our sport survives only because other people allow it, landowners, local governments, workers ,organizers and even those pesky competitors. If we lose any one of the ingredients we lose it all. (Soap box put away..)

Hey Gene, of all the roads in the Doo wop/Ocean shores Olympus, which would make for a simple 1 day sprint?

Sean,

DooWop roads would be 'easy'. Either Smith Creek or Palix would lend themselves to a single stage multiple pass event. Ocean Shores is Tribal land and the cost is quite high for the poor roads. Might be able to use the Pico stage also, that is owned by the City of Montesano rather than county owned. Great road, good logistics.

Part of the agreement on the 'new' Olympus roads is a once a year only use btw.

With the new Olympus developments 'we' probably won't have time to do the small mid-summer event as Steve and I talked about this year. I would be glad to point someone in the needed directions if that would help.
