Seat deal
April 06, 2012 07:28PM
Charles at www.safedrives.com has these really nice OMP winged seats in stock. We just bought one for the race car and I'm very impressed with the quality and fit of the seat. A bargain for what you get at $699 shipped. Here is a thread with pics from the 'other forum'. http://www.specialstage.com/forums/showthread.php?41695-Product-Feature-Seat-The-OMP-RS-P-T

If you're in the market I have no problem recommending these seats and Charles has always been a pleasure to do business with.

And they are even compact enough to fit in the smallest death traps. smiling smiley

I mean there isnt tons of room between the wing and the window but I would much rather have something then nothing.

We've got these seats and like them a lot.

My first experience with a seat with these big side bolsters was in 2004 when I was crewing and helping out with Moody's Audi Pikes Peak car and he put one in the passenger seat for his wife. Later that year at the Hartzel hill climb they went off the road at around 90 MPH due to a missed call (150 over crest, 150 over crest L3), nose dive-ish onto the front right corner and continued to bounce back and forth right to left, somehow never rolling. Anyhow, Brian was fine. His wife Erika ended up taking a heli ride back to Denver thanks to the head injury sustained as her noggin ping ponged around between the side bolsters. Ironically it was this accident that prevented her from being able to be in the car in 2005 and gained me the codriver seat, sitting in a Pro 2000 without the restraints. smiling smiley
Not saying this is common, but hey, it has happened possibly as many times as a intersecting V style door bar has broken and impaled someones leg.
I also find that the head restraint seats make it a bitch to get in and out of some cars.
I think with a Hans device or especially a Hutchens device, the winged seats are maybe overkill in most cars/scenarios.
However, that's what I'll be buying when I have to buy seats again because you never know WHEN they will be required. smiling smiley
Safe Drives is the best place on the west coast for safety gear by far. Now Charles just needs to finish that Volvo and get back out there advertising already.

I just got a pair of these from Charles.

To me it seems like a major upgrade.

First off; its not just a ad slogan, they really are designed to work with HNRs. With the old seats, the big lump of plastic behind your neck made it so you had to hunch granny style, compensated for by tilting the seat back, which didn't really work and ended with a back-ache by the end of the day. The new seat fits like a glove with a hans on, this alone makes it worth it to me.

I dig the "horns" I'd way rather have the ping-ponging of my head limited by those rather than by the tendons in my neck...

Charles runs a great business.

I just bought these seats also. Actualy 1 of Alkun's seats came from me becuase my fat ass needed an ex large. I do really like how they fit and Charles was really fair with me on changing to a differnt size. I will use safe drives again for more saftey stuff. Hans do nothing for side impact so head restraints are still needed.

Will these fit a guy that's 6'5" tall? Every winged seat I ever sat in my shoulders are squeezed between the wings. The only one I've ever been able to fit in is the large version of the Racetech which is pretty expensive.

Dave, I remember back at one of the PRI shows I tested every brand of seat I could sit in. I was sold on the quality of the Racetechs, but even their 'large' pinched my shoulders just like you said so I had to find another.

I ended up buying the Sabelt Taurus XL, it was the only wing type seat that didn't make me feel claustrophobic.

I'm 6'5"+ and had lot of trouble finding a wing seat that didn't hit my shoulders. The OMP HTE XL fits me height wise well, I didn't even have to pull the 1 inch seat pad. I have a 32" waist and it's not as tight in the hips as I'd like but it's not loose.

Just to put it out there,

I'm 5'11" but I have a long torso, my shoulders fit right under the wings on the OMP seats. Def. need to try before you buy.

Yeah every winged seat I've sat in (not many) hit my shoulders... Not good.
