to add to that, the reason my rx7 is de-rotored as well is cost. Mazda stopped making 12a housing, 13b housings are expensive as hell new since prices are always on the rise for those things. I also hated the 5 to 8 mpg when driving in anger thing.

Yes, I am already planning the piston conversion I'm going to be doing in one or two years.

And by "planning" I mean "I already have the badass canted-valve heads for the block I plan on using". This is going to be fun. I'm going to thermal coat the shit out of them and run about 12:1 compression with a nice healthy cam, too. Pete doesn't do things half-assed. (Well, he does, but with results!)

The reasoning is simple... parts are drying up, I seem to process a lot of them, and it is somewhat unfair/selfish to squander what parts are remaining.

Besides, I want to switch to a paddle shifted automatic for various reasons, which will be simple with what I have planned.

Nice work, Matt! I still think it's goofy, but you had a dream and you got it done.

From a motor that works by pure black devilry, to one with pistons that have fallen over. What exactly is wrong with a NORMAL engine? smiling smiley

Well the first madien voyage was a success. Two, well three things to deal with this summer, first I have a bearing noise on deceleration in 4th, dirt cheap trannys, also dirt cheap rebuild kits. I have a whirring noise coming from the back, can't tell if it was the tires or the 3rd member, but I was planning rebuilding it anyways when I put my locker in so that might bump that up. Once again cheap rebuilds kits O plenty. And third I'm not sure how to deal with, the intake is stupid loud, like probably as loud as the exhaust, so I have to figure a way to quiet that thing down, A LOT.

Some driving thoughts, it drives true and strait, it has enough brakes to tear your face off, no weird bumps, jiggles moans or creaks that wouldn't be present in a 30 year old car. I'm sure I made my exhaust way to big for an NA motor, and coupled with a light weight fly wheel my bottom end took a slight break. So some different exhaust in the future is going to be called for. Which will work out perfect because I'm going to get rid of that funky hump on the passenger side so a seat will fit a million times better and their head won't be hitting the roof.

Last but not least, I'm going to at some point do the fancy 4 link, probably not myself because I don't really think I can do it, but I'll find someone that can. But that's down the line. As of now its just a fancy street car until I finish school and can comfortably afford this lovely sport.

So last thoughts, I love this car, it absolutely brought a smile to my face when I was bombing down the freeway and everything was working great and running super smooth. Something about have a sence of knowing that I built this from pretty much nothing.

Because here is where it all started. smiling smiley

Awesome job Matt... Car has HUGE upgrade potential, and it's a blast to drive I bet. Even NA subies have great torque down low, so it should be a fun driver as is.

Please keep up with the updates - I'd like to see the car get fully sorted, and hear your comments on how it drives in anger.

Odd.

I thought all the n.a. Subies I have driven seem to be like most other Japaonaise motors that somehow worked while making significantly less torque than a modern design should...I though they secretly withdrew all the excess torque free floating in the zeitgeist from real motors and processed it somehow...

I guess "great" depends on what you are used to.

Didn't Subaru and Toyota just come out with this car?

That has a newer "square" motor 86mm bore and stroke.
Same otherwise.

I have to keep my 2.5 Legassy wound up to ludicrous RPMs to get more torque than a dry-rotted rubber band has to offer. I notice that when my wife drives it, it rarely sees fifth gear unless on an Interstate. It feels about as torquey as my 2.3 turbo in the XR4 off boost, but with no boost to help on the high side. And the compression checked out at 195-200+ all-round last year, so even though I'm at 163k on it, it still has pop in the cylinders.

But compared to one of those spinning triangle deals, it probably feels like this: grinning smiley

It's a cool ride, even if it does prove you've been off your ration of Guinness lately! And any project that involves come-a-longs and port-a-powers has to be good!

Mine was terribly gutless when I first bought it. Brought the car back to proper "stage 0", then redid the exhaust system as it looked restrictive with the original cat and 330k km on it. Had the shop remake the "Y", with 2" center resonator cat delete, and a free flowing muffler. Perked it right up.

Car was MUCH better after that and a blast to drive. Sounded great too...

So I guess maybe it comes down to what you do with them that determines your experience with them.
