Ok. The GoPro may be what you were thinking about, but the rule excludes all - and I think there could have been an attempt at a more common sense statement - "Helmet cams should be mounted as safely as possible as to not interfere with the driver, co-driver or other safety gear (hans, seats, etc). Should not weigh more then 4oz and have a flat mount that does not protrude more then 1/4" if the camera itself should break off." This way you don't need to re-write the rule in 2017... I'm "meh" about the POV helmet cams. The video Matt posted was fun - but I like to see other shots and variety in my vids. Of course KB has raised the bar and no amount of post production and video cams will ever make anything that comes from my rally car remotely cool. - Kris |

I have also looked at the Contour and I have the similar concerns. Can you name a helmet-mounted camera that wouldn't have similar issues? Common sense? If common sense were common enough here, a rule would not be needed. Even if we wrote Fizzbin-esque rules to cover all safety concerns, we would still have to rewrite them before 2017 because this stuff is evolving. It has been suggested to me that cameras may become integrated into helmets and, if that happens, we would need to rethink the whole thing. alan |

Not really - the ban is on cameras mounted to the helmets not cameras as an integral part of the helmet. Worse than an all out ban is a rule that tries to lay out camera specific safe applictaions. THAT is a rule that will need constant re-visiting. I agree the shot is a bad one to start with - doesn't make for good video at all - but that is a subjective call and others might like it. As for the safety of a camera mounted to a helmet - I personally don't know enough to make an informed decision but can easily see where they could become an issue. (and change the way the helmet takes a load in an impact.) I did a bullet cam shot from my helmet in 2004, tucked the cam into the helmet liner by the eye port (full face bell.) In retrospect not the greatest idea, I've since had one short out and get super hot super fast. It depends on how it is integrated. It could be integrated through a standardized mount. alan |

Kris: Rules like this come from too many people not thinking about what could happen if things go wrong.

OK John. I was simply taking your original language if 'integrated into to mean the cameras would not be external to the helmet as opposed to simply integrating the mount. I was just demonstrating a problem with trying to future-proof the rules in this area. We don't know what the future will bring. Maybe someone will invent a motorsports helmet mount that won't have the issues that the current mounts have. Maybe everyone will decide that POV from a helmet cam in a rally car sucks and no one will ever use one again. Maybe some company will put out an inexpensive, HD quality fiber optic lens system that can be taped to a helmet. alan |
