Check out your local rallycross and see who runs what. FWD and AWD top the sheets at my local events. For rallycross you need a small/light/nimble car most of the time as the course design is nothing like stage rally where a long boat car won't be at a disadvantage.

If you're looking for RWD and have your heart on it, a BMW will be readily available and is a good platform to transition to stage rally.

If you're looking for FWD, it really doesn't matter for rallycross. Guys have rented automatic Yaris because their regular rallycross beater was broken and still topped the sheets. Again, just get something that's light and tossable over high HP. For rally stick towards VW, Honda, Ford as they have more readily available parts out there.

Looks to me there is not many running anything 2WD. All subie 2.5rs's and the like. When you do see something it is 2WD it generally is civic, e30, rx7, and a mk2 gti.

Time difference between the 2wd and awd isnt a hellva lot (from 563 sec for the top 2WD, to 548 sec for the top AWD) but there are fewer in the 2wd class.

There was a family that regularly set FTD at Colorado Rallycross events in some old gutted NA FWD Isuzu pile o crap. Thing was, it weighed next to nothing.

I always thought a Suzuki Swift or Geo Metro would make a decent rallycross/Chump car. Or a Starlet that's welded onto the top of something else's floor plan. Probably an Impreza...

Just got off of the phone with John, thanks again. C'list pops up a volvo about every 30 minutes around here in my price range. If autos are an easy swap to t-5, like everyone is saying, its opening up the doors a tremendous amount. Are there any good write ups on volvo trans/rear end/motor swaps?

I hadn't thought of a Starlet

Thanks

John you mentioned projects, here is my toy. Not looking to start something like this with the volvo/rallyx car thingy, but hey its all in good fun. Firewall is moved 8" back to help with weight and make room for a motor, this is a cone smasher/track day toy. Motor is still to be decided, but looking at anything from a stock 16v to a vr6 again to a 1.8t again to a sr20 to a 1jz to a subie boxer motor with AWD. Just depends on when I want to drive it I guess.

Think of how frequently you see starlets on the road.
Thinkl of how many you've seen in the wrecking yards in the last 10-12 years..
1 to the first question, and 2 to the second for me...

Now what about windshields? spare doors? Front fender? headlight bucket?

All this rallycross talk: anything. It doesn't make a difference... and its just a fun wank in a field anyway...

If the goal is a car than can be played with hard in multiple venues you have to count on banging the thing up---and fixing it quickly...including sheetmetal...

I just randomly came across this bumper sticker and it seemed fitting for this discussion.

Scca. It would be in a mod class of some sort. I use to run emod. It was slow for emod however. I enjoy the building as much as the driving.

John. Yeah please get back to me on the xr. I have a good friend here at work that built his up from a shell just using junk yard parts/motor/trans/diff for a very reasonable price. Has a few of your goodies on it too.
