Re: Looking to start out, car options?

I actually stumbled across a SVO mustang on craigslist here two days ago. It was wayyy too clean had a some stuff done too it, he wanted 4500 buxs. I'll have to see if I can find one cheaper/closer to stock unit. Fox body mustangs are also not "cheap" IMO, at least the ones of c'list that pop up. Everyone wants 5k -10k for one, idk. Maybe I should be searching in a different way.

There have been a slew of volvo's for 500 buxs have popped up. But they are all wagons, 940 turbo's but wagons.

Still on the hunt.

I haven't called Lawrence yet, but its on my to do. (Moving, so thats eating the time up/money)

Also, the Wimpeys or their parents or--idunno--Somehow the Wimpeys are in harrisonburg from time to time.

Yup, and kinda :-)

Parents live near Staunton ---Will be down there this coming weekend to fetch the rally car.
Older brother owns a house in Harrisonburg (but now lives overseas)
All three of us spent upwards of 10 years living in Harrisonburg
I live near Washington DC so Richmond is only about 90 miles away.

NO kidding. I've been following you guys for several years now. Hope to meet you guys in person one day at one of these. Using your cage design for the "new" mk2 in my own as much as possible. Is that thing running yet?

Sounds like you're looking in Richmond, and taking the CL ad as what they'll actually part with it for smiling smiley

Biggest issue I see with the ... moosetang ... is that every grandma seems to own one... and it's a convertible.

...I think you get the idea. I see more fox bodies in the junkyards around here than I do 240s... I don't recall ever seeing an xratty in a yard. Stop looking at the shiny ones!

Very nice.

I see why now, I put "fox body" in the search..... dumb ass.

Thanks I'll look into them. A 2.3 turbo would be hella fun in one of those.

What makes the last two potentially shady?
That they have a phone number or that they have no pics?
Just curious.

Every car I've checked out from CL that has been "worked on" usually needs to be "worked on". But was mostly my quest for a decent CRX, which I gave up on, not sure how the mustang crowd compares. I half expect most cars with "mods" to have them duct taped on or some shit.

Well, Paul (& Matt) drop me a line at quantumrallysport email address with the gmail suffix There is getting to be a rather large number of rally cars floating around the VA/DC/MD area and we have had a couple of small get togethers for beer thanks to Dave Shindle but should really be doing get togethers that involve building and fixing rally cars so we get more cars out on the stages....

Short list of rallyists nearby (I know I have forgotten at least a few)
Me (2wd golf)
Mark Bowers (Starion, 323, Celica Alltrac)
Duffy Bowers (Co driver)
Dave Shindle (co driver & Talon
Jared Lantzy (co driver)
Peter Deingbigh (sp) (Xr4ti guy and MTB rider)
Jason Smith (PA) (Open light Subaru)
Nui Srisrook (Focus and other cars)
Colin Bombara (2wd --now 4wd Subaru)
Mark Spence (2wd Golf)
Volvo guy in Richmond area (sorry, I don't know your name)
Plus the 60+ people that show up to DC region SCCA rallycross events at Summit Point

Doooood!
A smart choice is a car under $500. Some of those listings are for a lotta dough.

One way of lookin at its buy a cheap car and get (effectively) free good suspension... or get a shinier car and THEN BUY $2000 boingers.

I know which way works better-er-er.

Even with v8

More importantly, the results of said vehicle.
http://www.rallyracingnews.com/scca/prescott00-results.html
http://www.rallyracingnews.com/arsg/laughlin00-results.html
http://www.rallyracingnews.com/scca/gormanridge00.html
http://www.rallyracingnews.com/scca/rim01-res-club.html

So he DNF'd the probably rougher Gorman event and placed pretty poorly on events where horsepower should be a huge advantage.

Rally Idaho 2009 coverage featuring Mark Utecht.
Day One:

Day Two:

Utecht won I think every stage on day two in 2wd. Possibly even overall on one of the stages. If I recall, Hurst said the build cost on that car was around $8k plus time. Starting with a $4k base car is NOT the way to do it though.

Better yet, buy a base 92-95 BMW 325i or 325is and don't do ANYTHING other than stripping interior, install cage and required safety equipment, skid plates, find a better 188 mm final drive and clutch pack LSD (I've found 3.73 with diff as low as $200) to put in rear, order a set of JVAB coilovers (John! Have you seen Derik Nelson's M3? The Reiger have offset top mount to get camber which needs figured out!), and a set of Porterfield brake pads. Maybe change the oil and check the other fluids. Make sure ball joints aren't trashed, and rear bushings are somewhat decent. Go enter a rally. Better yet, enter three.
After your first event you can start looking at replacing any bushings in the suspension, maybe start keeping an eye out for a Z3 or whatever to get the quicker ratio steering, and if you want you can maybe do a new exhaust and cold air intake and maybe a chip.
Don't look at Dave Kern's BMW build and consider following that path.
Do read Bill Caswell's interview on Gearbox Magazine.

Most important quote:
"I definitely could have built a really nice rally car, but why? I had a no-expense-spared track car that I built over the years entered into my first rally, Rally Tennessee, and nearly destroyed it.

I realized I had a lot of learning to do and went and found the cheapest E30 that I could. I didn’t want to wait all summer for a proper build, so I added a cage and safety gear and showed up at the next rally. I was there to have fun with my friends before going back to work."

^^ I remember watching that back then ^^ Good info, wonder if the mustang I quoted DNF because of driver or car? Thanks

Josh, Thanks for the invite! I'll send you something and keep tabs. Found about 25 fox bodies on c'list. Looking for a good forum to prowl around on. I think the next rallyx is in a few months at summit. I may set a schedule up for myself to try and have something by then.

Paul, over the years I could not help but casting a critical eye on the Fox bodied things. They're just a car and I really doubt that you'll find any information anywhere which will be at all related driving them on gravel...

Really, be sensible and avoid the cliche of the V8. even people familiar with V8 powered cars often find they are no quicker, or only marginally quicker than pokey ass little warmed over 4s, and then only in very simplistic road conditions.

A 2.3 with the head milled 060, some lumpy cam, and SHORT axle could be plenty of fun, LOADS of fun...even a stock V8 is primarily an excercise in frustration trying to hook up. Too much torque at low low revs, very difficult initial drive...you go down not forward...

A 2.3 with a turbo, well.......(heh---heh heh)

The key thing would be like any car; stiffen and reinforcing the body shell, getting decent travel especially in the rear.

But I think you need to just make a decision instead of thrasing around.

Xratty, Volvo, Foxangst, all ultimately all would end up with the same gearbox, clutch, turbo, etc just stuff like strut bolt up, shock tower position.

I still say Xratty is pretty damn good.

Also found a 700 dollar 2.3 lx mustang that needs a trans, and a 800 dollar xr that needs a turbo and other bits put back on.
