Yeah, in that case. Volvo is where its at. It would take a lot to make that cage meet new regulations if I ever wanted to do stage stuff. He wants 2k for it alone. I could cage a shell for almost half that and meet regulation.

It does have the "cool" factor however.

You way sideways is a bigger cool factor.

The sapphire is set up for a 2.3 turbo and RWD as it sits I believe, but Volvo body parts are going to be much easier to get than Sapphire Cosworths....

On the beater side, I have pretty much a ding and rust free 85 with 5 speed, it has not been driven since 96. Bi-plain spoiler in great shape, has factory manual windows. Yes, windshield is perfect.

Gas tank gummed out, but 99 percent is here.

I have had it sitting under the tarp for 1.5 year and would part it out in late summer unless someone wants to resurect her.

Price is 1200; or about 30-35 percent worth of parts.

If your guy is seriously interested, I can pull her out and take some pics; not into the undecided tirekickers.

Be very wary of rust on this guy's stuff. I saw one "rust free" Sierra from him that you could put your arms through the floor underneath the rear beam.

eek. All I can do is try. I have a healthy fear of rust. Dealt with it enough bringing the mk2 back up to snuff.

Hey Paul.

I'm not far from you. Good luck on the xratty or volvo. I've had my eye out for a while for either, and best I came up with was a rolling shell of a merkur and the Charlottesville hipsters eat up all the 240s. For an xr4, I'd recommend trying to get with Peter (I think that's his name) Denbigh up in Harrisonburg. He's the guy who republished the sierra motorsport manually thingy. I used to work with his wife, so I might be able to get his contact info, if you're interested. They also have some sort of merkur club thing or something.

Best bet is probably the MK2. Plenty of VWs around here and plenty of good folks to work on them.

Let me know if you're ever over this way. I don't rally myself, but love to talk about it! Also in the area: Marcel Caiscai and Mark Bowers are local to me, and Mark Hoerath is in your neck of the woods.

Thanks for the heads up. I really enjoy meeting locals that know whats up. I saw a beat to hell '88 240 4 door and the guy wanted 2200 buxs for it on c'list. Just nuts, I know what you mean about the hipsters. I would like to get in touch with the Harrisonburg guys if possible, as it seems like every Merkur owner knows of a guy who knows a guy.

Do you do any other kind of motorsport with any of these cars?

You right about the mk2. I just need to take some time off and get it done. It would give me something to drive out there, even if its not RWD.

Well that cage was nowhere near legal, stock GTI box, 164k miles.
Maybe as a rust free shell but......

Try and remember the main reason we push the 2 RWD cars is the ability to use parts much stronger than original---which are already far far stronger than VW parts---at costs mere fractions of VW parts...

Final drives from free to $140
Gearsets much close than the so called "close" GTI set either already in the second hand box or for $380 new..

Motors that are significantly larger in volume from 2.1 to 2.3 vs 1.8 or 2.0

Engine, clutches gears, final drives and diffs that are dead reliable even with the torque of a turbo motor---for fractions of the cost of VW parts, which are still borderline reliable or flat chronic problems...

Easy serious upgrades of brakes up to the sizes current on top level cars (ie show me some 11.75 x 1.25" VW brake kits that fit under gravel wheels).. Cost? Double or more.

Have you called Lawrence?

Not sure I know "what's up", but I've been to a couple rallies and have lurked here for quite some time! Not sure what I did with their emails or numbers. I know where his wife works, I'll try and stop by sometime. Also, the Wimpeys or their parents or--idunno--Somehow the Wimpeys are in harrisonburg from time to time.

My family owned an XR4 when I was a pimple faced teenager: "God that wing looks funny! WTF kind of name is Merkur?", etc. Fun car... step dad sold it for an... F150. Several years later I get into rally and realized what it was and wanted to kill him.

I haven't done much this year, but I've been grass-o-crossing a beater chevy aveo up at summit point on and off for a couple years. I should be working at least RallyWV and hopefully that new PA rallysprint.

Edit: There aren't many good 240s or xrattys in the area... but as stupid as it sounds... there are an ASSLOAD of fox bodies. The 2.3T or 5l in that short wheelbase ... on gravel... just seems like an enormous grin waiting to happen.

Fox Moose-angst wheelbase is 100.5" (I vaguely recall) ....not bad ..
with stich-welding to stiffen the reputedly flexy-flyer shell, more wheel travel (easy) and a sensible spec motor---meaning not a V8----they could be fun.

Yup, and kinda :-)

Parents live near Staunton ---Will be down there this coming weekend to fetch the rally car.
Older brother owns a house in Harrisonburg (but now lives overseas)
All three of us spent upwards of 10 years living in Harrisonburg
I live near Washington DC so Richmond is only about 90 miles away.
