Rally insurance, who knew?

My codriver sent this to me, I had no Idea this kind of insurance was out there. Not that I'll use it for an old Honda, but interesting none the less http://www.dcmi-u.com/Ermis/products.php#

Here is the US Corporate Headquartier:

Looks kinda like an ordinary home...

Their REAL headquartier is in 75 Paris and that means "Ville de Paris" so expensive and in Belgium...(bonus points if you can name a popular insult for BELGIANS!.......ding ding!!"winking smiley (Bonus bonus points if you can identify the source of that preceding quote)

I smell something fishy.

Well now, the result of last week's competition when we asked you to find a derogatory term for the Belgians. Well, the response was enormous and we took quite a long time sorting out the winners. There were some very clever entries. Mrs Hatred of Leicester Said 'let's not call them anything, let's just ignore them' ... (applause starts vigorously, but he holds his hands up for silence) ... and a Mr St John of Huntingdon said he couldn't think of anything more derogatory than Belgians. (cheers and applause; a girl in showgirl costume comes on and holds up placards through next bit) But in the end we settled on three choices: number three ... the Sprouts (placard 'The Sprouts'), sent in by Mrs Vicious of Hastings... very nice ; number two..... the Phlegms (placard) ... from Mrs Childmolester of Worthing; but the winner was undoubtedly from Mrs No-Supper-For-You from Norwood in Lancashire... Miserable Fat Belgian Bastards. (placard; roar of applause) Very good - thank you, Carol. (Carol exits)

Rule #1 of rally car ownership. If you cannot afford to completely write off the car, you cannot afford to rally.
There was a brit guy locally that had ideas that he was going attain mass wealth thanks to the X Games. He recruited a top local driver and build a high spec open class car. Last time I heard of anyone seeing him he was locked up bawling in the porta potty at service when he discovered the driver had rolled the car multiple times and down into a rather large ravine. Never been seen or heard from since, though I heard a rumor he was now in France helping his wife run her company. Rumor was she had funded the whole idea and was none to happy at his poor management.

That is really interesting. I had no idea that they had insurance for these kinds of things. I just figured that the teams paid for everything (and im sure most do anyway).

Hmmm, could be a different operation but it looks familar to me. Belgium, DC-- etc, could be Guy DeClerq(spelling?) can't remember the dudes last name. Stay away from these guys, they had been a reliable carrier til about 2006 or so when both myself and Lance Smith took it in the A for about $10k each. I had heard similar stories from Grand Am and Indy teams.

Competition Car Insurance out of the UK is the only solid bet for crash coverage.

I'd imagine insurance of some sort is actually pretty common outside of club racing - while I believe he's pretty well off, I don't think Evgeny Novikov wants to shell out another $500k every time he writes off another WRC car.

It's not like he's destroying 100% of the car though. There are salvageable parts (likely engine/trans) suspension bits will be hit or miss. Interior bits will all be there, including electronics. Don't know what the hourly charge would be for a shell prep but that will be the big cost. It still won't be cheap, but nowhere near $500k. I'm actually curious what a ready to go shell costs from someone like m-sport. Considering it's like $10k to fully prep and R2, shell prep has to be less than that.

Not sure about that. Race Car engineering did an article in 2008 or 2009 where they asked when Citroen desided to right off a shell. And the break even point between building a new and repairing an old one was a month with 4 full time fabircators working on it. Figure at least $70 as the shop rate for those guys and you are looking at almost $12,000 in shell prep before they say thats too much lets just build a new one.

Yeah for a WRC shell prep. Should have been more emphasis that the "less than $10k" is for an R2 shell prep. That's also just labor on the shell, body-in-whites are like $3000-$4000 you need to add extra. Then there's other random welded bits. I probably wouldn't doubt that a WRC shell and the prep involved cost more than my entire rally Civic.

$70 per fabricator per hour x 4 for a month = over $50,000. I suspect actual costs of fabricators are higher than that.

See thats why I am a driver and not a co-driver. I did the math for 4 weeks at 40 hours a week for one fabricator.

Another problem is that 'a month' is not a very precise measure. I took a 40 hr week x 52 weeks/ 12 months to get an average month.
That said, 4 fabricators working full time on an already bare shell should be able to get a lot done quickly. I'd also expect teams would prepare spare shells in 'down time' as make-work projects. Doesn't really change the value of the 'product' though.

Either way the suggestion of the article is that a new, prepared, shell costs between 650 and 700 hours of shop time.
