Is the form typically wood for hammerforming? I suppose it has to be something that can hold up to the hammer...

I usually like to use white oak or maple. Any tight grained hardwood is good. It's usually good for 30-50 parts made from aluminum, or 10-20 parts made from steel (depends on the metal thickness).

If you plan on making parts for years to come a lot of guys make the hammerforms from solid aluminum. But the 'backer' piece can still be wood.

But did the RULEZ say you could make the gusset outta 2 pieces?

(I was doing 2 piece back in the mid 80s)(But they weren't even mentioned till 12- years later or more)

The RULEZ (FIA App. J Art. 253, definition of gussets) say "Reinforcement for a bend or junction made from bent sheet metal with a U shape". Under this definition, why couldn't the 'bent sheet metal' consist of more than one piece?

Bob's gussets are quite pretty and I wouldn't have an issue with them.

Grant's templates - whether he knows it or not - have been used in quite a few west coast cars over the past five years or so. I point almost everyone who asks to them as starting points on creating their gussets.
