I guess an important question might be, did these guys actually get some sponsorship money? If so they are laughing at me for blowing my own dough.

If they're laughing at all it is probably in embarrassment.
Or jealousy at how good the 240 Volvo is and the limitless potential of it..

They lost to Ian Topping's 242 both days. And congrats to Ian for 9th OA/3rd in G2 in the regional.

Promotion is always skating around lies and mis-truths. Sometimes intentional, sometimes wishful thinking. If great results were the bar for sponsorship then about 30 Sprint Cup cars would be running with a number only.

Remember the black kid from a few years back trying to drum up money for a rally car? He kinda disappeared as we suspected he would and I doubt it made anyones rally career more difficult. People in rally might need to learn the fine art of promotion just a bit...if they want to. I had my entries paid by a tavern, my tires discounted significantly by a tire store, money from a local parts chain, tech help and parts price break from Nissan and even co-op money from Hamms national office. The IRS allowed the rest of the expenses as a legit business deduction. No one just offered any of that, I had to ask, beg, plead, beat on doors.

But you did good. People did look and see you. I OFTEN pointed to you to beginners and said that "That's what you can do in a simple car"

The question is---in this context--did you go out before you had entyered on event and throw around a lot of utter crap about what they'll get if the give you money to play?

I know you enough to think you didn't... and if there's anything useful to this discussion it might be to discuss and unravel how you did those deals, what was the trail of connections that allowed the thing to work..

You were local and I think that is the part that these "Pro" guys forgot and many don't think of.

Sadly I don't remember just how the sponsorship thing went. I only wanted to go rally and didn't much care how I finished. For me the joy of sliding was way before the competitve thing.

But..this is a different age. Al Gore and the internet has changed everything. People act and react differently. Everybody is a big deal. facebook is proof of that.

I remember an event where Janice Damitio did well in her old red 510. Another competitor walked up to her and rather than congrats looked at her and said " You wouldn't have done that well if I had entered..."
Egos are a terrible thing somethimes.

I'd guess the new guys maybe learned a bit about rally and ralliests this weekend, hopefully. Still they did finish and that is to be commended along with the chastizing.

I went that fast on those roads when they were open, in an 88 4Runner. Or maybe not if that would be in violation of traffic regulation.

I started this thread to poke fun at a naieve new team, who made some tall claims. Thats it. Almost every newbie does it, and they deserve to be heckled. Hell, just this Saturday, Timmy was sort of alluding to how fast he will be at his first rally...

Probably has something to do with closing down the Double Barrel Bar or whatever that place was before going back into Wellsboro.

I miss STPR being a Free Alcohol event.

On the topic of winning sponsors

Wannabe with rally but long time in the business/science world. I see people make it complicated and ugly every day for many reasons, arrogance, egos, greed, desperation. I have a real simple approach that has worked well for me for deals of all sizes with all types. It's old school but real. Ask people what they want, be real with what you can offer and then over deliver on what they want. Walk away if what they want is not something you would also want. Wash, rinse, repeat. Delivering on a need builds trust, building trust builds credibility, credibility brings success. It's those who lie and steal and take because they can that make it tough for the honest people. True story!

Well they may have to time Timmy with a calendar page and he'd still be a rocket compared to his build time.

Walk away if what they want is not something you would also want.

Or "is not something you can deliver." I can say that some of the people who have contacted me looking at sponsoring things, I've turned them down saying "I don't feel right taking that money, because I don't think you're going to get what you _think_ you're going to get."
