Someone had posted a thread asking for good practice areas in WI and it got me curious if anybody new of somewhere I could get similar practice in but here in Northern California, hopefully near Sacramento. I would prefer somewhere that I will not get in trouble for driving "recklessly" Thanks for any and all help.

One important thing to remember; if things get fucked up ( you get hurt, run over someones dog, start the woods on fire, crash into a family on a picnic) its going to wreck it for everyone else.

Best option is being on private property, open field with cones. And even then, have an emergency plan in place, like cell phone reception? know how long it would take to get EMS there? got fire extinguishers, first aid kit and a little first aid knowledge?


There is that off-road vehicle parlk east of Sac. I've thought it would be killer to rent that place out for rally testing or sprints.

When rally is outlawed, only outlaws will be rallying.

Yeah, patience grasshopper as well. Most of the rally guys in the area are probably still sleeping off/licking their wounds from idaho.

We use the OHV park up there (prairie city) for rallyx. The area we use without the cones could be use for some 3rd gearish hooning. Just pay the $5 entry fee to the park for the day.

There's also a bunch of smoothish (depending on how long its been since they've been graded) access roads that they will let you open a car up on. To do this you probably need a few other guys, radios, etc to make sure you don't mow down some toddler on his 50cc bike on training wheels though.

The rangers seem cool with it, just don't speed on the grave/paved sections. I got a bit of a talking to last time I was there after shaking the car down and rolling up the access road a hair over 30 (speed limit is 15on those). It FELT slow at the time but not quite slow enough. The rangers there are quite well armed as well.

dont forget wherever you end up others may as well. i found a nice 5 mile gravel road 30 minutes north of me, i scouted the location found no houses and no blind intersections. my second time through i found a women on horseback within .5 miles from my turn around. moose kill but a horse owner will kill you.

and none of us need to "practice", we were all born super badass drivers. we just need to "test" our cars to see if they can handle our badassitude.

The one place I have gone, is a less than 1 mile stretch on the outskirts of a local off road area. The road dead ends, and there are no trails that cross it. Only go fast back towards your road blocking help, and we stay in radio contact. We gave rides to anyone that came upon us. Still gets me nervous though. I am at the point now that renting a private road is the only sane option.

You can always barnstorm the orchards on the west side of the valley. For extra credit, you can dodge the farmers bullets.

Prairie City is a good option for some testing. The key is to get some radios and some cones with a group of a few cars. Block some of the area with tow rigs and get good at practicing the same turns until you perfect your braking zone, turn in, weight transfer and exit. Yes, it's not the same as a stage, but I have to agree on the practice challenge of being bad PR for the sport.

our rallycross program is more of a rallysprint for 20 dollars than it is a rallycross. I think Dick hit top of 3rd in the Salta STi. I have seen about 50mph in the Rx7 on the straight, which goes into a off camber R3 down. Good times.

Then again we usually have roll overs...
