Mini Manual?
June 13, 2012 02:31PM
Is there a source on how to prep a classic Mini for rally racing?

Yeah, back when Paddy was beating Erik.

Yeah, back when Paddy was beating Erik.

No back when the mighty V4 was dropped in and the second life as a giant killer started. When Rauno and Timo and Paddy were transcendant was more like 45 years ago.
50 years ago it was Saab 96 with the monster 850cc beating everybody.

(see the Mini was great for a short period when Continental events on narrow narrow twisty roads so twisty that theinsanely short overall length was a huge advantage---and while they had tires that were not totally overpowered like nealy everybody else was suffering, but on gravel and faster stuff, Saab annihilated Mini, and matched and beat Escorts when the 100 hp deficit wasn't decisive well into the mid-70s---Saab 96s last WRC win was in Jan/Feb 1976, a decade after Mini's time)

What sort of nonsense you need to know? Rear wheel cylinders? Stock is 3/4"*, get the MGB-GT cylinders which are 1/16" or 1/8" bigger.
gearing?
Motor?
HD inner Spicer joint?
Whaddya wanna know?

*was Saab 95 wagoon rear cylinder as well, and homologated even in Gp1 for the 96: perfect f/r brake balance......stock 96 was 5/8". Same basic part tho.

Here might be some info: and if and when you start building it, make it after FIA regs, prices are going up in Europe....

Nothing right now. Was looking at a 1980s British import for $2000 in Johnson City, TN.

Wow...sounds familiar. The car I'm building is a 1980s British import from somewhere in TN. When did you see it for sale?? Can't be the same car...that would be too bizarre.

Must not be the same car...picked mine up towards the end of March.

If you do get one, that 'Last Works' book is about the mid 90s Group A and Group N cars...definitely worth a look.

I just bought that new one. If you start buying used stuff for your racecar you're going to spend a lot of time in the pits, or so I've heard.

Didn't want to replace that melted piston and block anyway. Lol.

Do you have that book Dirka? Curious about the one review that says it's pretty generalized - wonder if it's worth it. Probably 'have' to get it anyway.

Plus the 16v GTI Group A Parts manual which you can find on line.

As to the Mini book, what a funny review.
