Makes me sad knowing I will never get to race let alone practice on a road like that.

Set a goal and plan to attain it.
You don't necessarily need to go to Finland for a road 'like' that. There are some events in north america that have 'WRC quality' roads (according to drivers who have competed for several years at WRC events ... and I don't mean Block)

Sorry, I misunderstood the title and then got confused.
I think you must mean "second best roads in the world"
smiling smiley
Or are the "best" roads in the world IYO based on how much time the car isnt actually in contact with the planet ?
Its not hard to find massive jumps in forestry roads.

Aren't you curious who these guys are, which WRC events and which North American events they did to compare---and if they were just being polite... I mean you can't say a word to Morry-son without him ranting for pages, but I'm curious. And kind of curious where roads in USA/Canada like those in the videos might be?

(always with the vague allusions "according to drivers..." who?

OK, I misspoke, slightly. I should have said 'according to at least one driver...'
One driver in paticular was a Former BRC/PWRC/Chinese Rally Champion who has also done a lot of gravel crew work. Specifically speaking about Tall Pines he said the roads were easily world class an very technical he's seen. The comment was made duirng recce with no-one else around, so it wasn't just to 'be nice.'

That's absolutely hilarious coming from you.

Tall Pines roads are probably pretty close. Jump after jump after jump and stuff big enough to knock the wind out of a co-driver if you get it wrong. Some narrow and technical stuff combined with jumpy fast stuff.
Perce Neige... when I ran it it was absolutely brilliant. Challenging, massive snow banks, a 50Km long stage and most of the stage was too narrow to pass in.
Hell, Big White's roads can be demanding - much more-so than the roads we have around here (unfortunately.)

"Everyone I talk to" says this is priceless coming from you! Glad to see you have a sense of humour about yourself John!

But, sadly, you missed the point that he was probably 'like'ing.
Set a goal and plan to attain it.
Maybe it is Finalnd, or New Zealand, or Pines, or what-ever. The only way you end up actually racing on a road like that is to plan to do it - not sit back and lament the fact that you won't.

Think of all the work John could get out to his customers in a reasonable time frame if he spent half the energy he does trolling forums on building his parts. LOL

Love the video with all the careful editing. Good for getting the blood moving.

Roads look similar to some I played on in North Bend before all the gates. Them VW drivers are committed to the turns.

Shock.... Amazement!! that JVL is the same troll here that has him banned elsewhere on the internet.

John do you sell more product for acting as the asshole online? Hint: No.

Do yourself a big favor and put 10% as much effort into things such as counting the number of teeth on trigger wheels for fancy flywheels before sending them out as you do into shooting people down on the internet. Also...... The engine you built for me and assembled with incorrect bearings awaits resolution. I'd prefer to have the money I put up so that you could be a property owner to any engine you build.

Soooooo Banned Troll lets fly with the phlegm yet again! It gets a dog cookie for being consistent.

Hey John.... The money I owe to Brian does not concern you. Beating that dead horse here won't make you look any better.

The engine you assembled with bearings for an extra .010 on the mains and rods as 'Payment' for the money I put up so that you could become a homeowner and then wouldn't answer the telephone for what...... five years? Yup. We can discuss that one. Wanna throw shit as though you are still in Hi-Screwl? I'm not surprised or impressed. Ready to man-up and take care of it John? I just want the money I put up for your house. I'll be delighted to return the engine you built.

So what's it going to be John?

So what's it going to be John?

Eat shit Lane. It's been 7 years. I've told you dozens of times, DROP IT OFF, go to some biker bar and talk about guns and how Obama is a Ni***r, then come pick it up. The bearings are right here for 7 years.
There's a lift outside and if you ever had made it here, you'd see that.
You really do have brain damage, don't you..?

And it DOES concern me since I put the guy into your hands.
He paid me for a motor, I said you could sell him a car and do the install, 2 years went by and you hadn't, so I put he and Al--my friend--together and they agreed on a price.
I put the HIS motor in your hands, he expected a motor in a car and gave up and wanted to cash out.
You took the cash, you admit it and you refuse to pay him. That makes you a thief and when you "sold' it to Al, that makes you a fraudster---and you put Al into the situation of sitting in possession of stolen property...

Make it right, slimeball... use your brain seizures as a defense, but make it right...

But above all, go away---whining like you do is for that other place.

Not going to 'Eat Shit' John... Not my style. Projection on your part? You have a special recipe you're hoping to share? Thanks; I'll pass. As for 'Seven years;' It's been just shy of six. Your memory sucks about as bad as mine.

John at this point I'll pass on having it back. I want no part of anything you've been a part of. I do however want the money I put up so that you can own your little slice of paradise; right there in the flightpath.........

As for your thing about 'Biker bars and calling Obama a Nigger'....... Grow the fuck up John. Really.

As I've said all along....... I'll be delighted to drop the thing with you. You will get to be there when I do to receive it. Upon receiving it..... You hand me the money I put up for your home....... We're done. No need for your endless lines of garbage and calling me all manner of names.

Obviously! I let myself get sucked into anything that had to do with YOU! Lesson learned John.

So now you've spun this into my having supposed to have sold Brian a car that I was going to install an engine into and what? John the more I get to thinking about this the more it stinks and I sure as shit wouldn't put it past you to see what you could get away with in trying to fuck me out of something that someone already got paid for.

Show of hands people.......... Who here has been fucked over by me? ....... EVER.

Who has been fucked over by this guy who has all manner of ahhhhh colorful things to say about me?

Hey John..... Know when to shut the fuck up. This is one of those times. Just put up the money I'm owed. Be polite to me in the future. I'll be the same to you.

You Brian damaged idiot I paid you back and did it in from of a non+brain damaged witness. Around $600 cash and then I paid for crank grinds, boring, decking, parts, and some piddly amount for time.. Your shit didn't crawl from here to Ballard you moron..

You claim to not remember friving from you cow-shit infested compound up there all the way to Mill Valley California ,you claim to not remember getting over $3000 in cash in your hand FOR BRIAN's motor---did you forget that it wasn't your motor and T5 box to sell, and you claim to not remember driving 875 miles back to that cow dung reeking hole.

Why would you remember that you were paid?

You keep bringing it up for 6-7 years, and you do it to get a reaction, you are a pervese fucker, a real passive agressive pile of shit.

We agreed to do that deal, you offered no objections to anything at the time, we're squre.
You been offered a simple solution that will make things right, you consistently bring this up in out of context places, you need to find somewhere else to rant and rave..

And you are a racist, xenophobic, two faced pile of shit..you always have been.

Unless of course you found God or something up in your little paradise of tolerance..

Oh wait they aren't tolerant up there. You fit right in.

say good bye John.

Get your brain fixed.

So, um,

Back to the original topic.

The Finnish roads are that way because they're they were constructed that way for historical reasons that're somewhat peculiar.

See, in WWII, the Finns got screwed by both sides. I'm not going to go into the history of that here, but they came out of the war owing huge reparations to the Soviets, and with little industry to make those payments. Their main industries were in shipbuilding, railway/locomotive construction, and wood industries. The latter is key here: the Finnish logging industry needed good solid roads to support trucks to move the lumber. To do this, they developed forest road-building methods that would allow for roads that could be frozen solid in the (just barely sub-)arctic winter and yet still be usable by heavy trucks in the spring thaw and throughout the summer months. While they paid off their fiscal debt in a shockingly short time (six years!), their road reconstruction continued throughout the 1950s.

During this time, the effort on road construction was primarily for industry, yet there was also an esthetic value added - create straight lines whereever possible. When there was the opportunity, the roads were straightened.

The net result of this was good solid relatively-wide roads that stayed smooth and driveable year round, but still followed the undulating topology of the rolling hills throughout Finland. The end result is that where the road goes over a hill or crest, you can pretty well predict what it's going to be like on the other side - and the odds are that it's going to be relatively straight.

Contrast this to North American roads, which in most cases are built from former cart tracks - which in turn developed from wildlife tracks. In many cases, the route follows the easiest path up or down a hill, which may not be the straightest. Couple that with a reluctance to move the path due to environmental concerns (which admittedly came into vogue only in the 70s or so) and you can see why the reworked Finnish roads afford big jumps with relatively safe landing zones compared to almost anywhere else in the world.

Now, I'm no expert, and I haven't seen all of the roads used on rallies here in the US and Canada, but I can say a couple of things for certain:

1) Of the roads I've seen in the US, the closest thing to a Finnish road is possibly Concord Pond at NEFR, or maybe some of the purpose-built logging roads used for Doo Wops on the Olympic Penninsula in Washington.
2) Not all the roads in Finland are like the ones used for the WRC event based around Jyvaskyla. Roads going to a mokki (a summer cottage) often look just like the roads carved out of old cart tracks used in the Sierra Nevada foothills here in CA, or the roads in da YooPee, or even in upstate NY and Maine.
