Congrats Grant!!!
Clear up some confusion for me, Don' you already have a daughter?

Thanks Sean. No human daughter, this is the first! Our mastiff is doing well at accepting her into the family. When she cries she brings her a bone to try to sooth her. It's pretty dang cute.

My numerous kitties would coome and circle and purr and rub when my girls were babies and would cry. I explained to the girls that the kitties were their older sisters and that they cared..

Now, that's a given.

Biggest life changing event ever. Congrats Grant, enjoy. My eldest will soon turn 9, and my youngest just turned 7, both girls, best 2 things that ever happened to me.

That was a book called Nurture Shock. Basically some actual science on why many common and popular current parenting practices do more harm than good. Good one to get from library. Bringing Up Bebe is another that we're listening to on audio book right now that is about some of the differences between French and American parenting methods. Good books regarding parenting philosophies and developing/honing your own method.
Anyhow, congratulations!!! That is awesome news! The only book I read and I just read it month by month is called "The Expectant Father" by Armin Brott. I read a few pages from about 5-10 different books at the book store and decided on this one as it isn't all doom and gloom and is very straight forward with a touch of humor.
For Kelli, anything by Ina Mays is good. The only book Abbey had was Ina Mays' Guide to Childbirth. It's a little hippyish but also very very good. Do NOT let her read trash like What to Expect series. Most US based baby books that are popular are popular because they read like a soap opera with every potential negative aspect highlighted and blatant misuse of statistics to push a point and result in frightened and anxious pregnant women and partners.
Take breastfeeding for example. Statistics are thrown left and right regarding how breastfeeding is so much better than formula (it is). I met couples and husbands during some of the courses our hospital offered that were literally scared shitless that they were going to fail at breastfeeding and their child would end up screwed. What NONE of the books ever report is the most important statistics. Less than 1% of babies that are not breast fed are fed formula due to a physical limitation by the mother. In other words, very few formula fed babies are fed formula because there mother was unable to feed them. It's usually things like, raised by grandma because 16 year old girl is out partying, same girl at 25 doesn't want boobs to get weird, working professional can't find time in her professional life to breast feed or pump, etc.

Congrats Man!

Sean is right, the what to expect books are terrible for maintaining any sort of positive attitude.

My wife was one who physically couldn't hack the breastfeeding, went through two months of tears for each of our kids before giving up and switching to formula. She is a nutter though and is going to try again when we have our third in January.

And like Vittorio said, more than one is a lot more fun!

Word. I almost punched some "La Leche" bitch in Safeway who gave my wife a hard time about buying formula when she simply couldn't keep up with the hungrey little cub.

The chemical stew your body releases during early parenthood is the most powerful trip of all. Ride the lightntnig, Grant.

Something like 90% of French women do not breast feed past 1 month.

I've always said I'll be more productive at the shop once the baby is here. Seems counterintuitive but okay.
