Stay on the outside car shots longer, cutting away mid corner is a bit too soon. Also, why did you not show the rest of the start?

90% of the awesomeness of in-car videos is hearing the engine sounds, which are somehow not there. It's a good song, but too much, in my opinion.

pretty good, otherwise though.

It amusingly looks sped up in the incar, due to the music being so loud.

Other than that, nice work

Oh, I know. You can BARELY hear the engine and when the notes get louder it all makes sense, but it's just sort of an amusing consequence of having the music so loud.

Yeah, I need to work on audio mixing. The problem is, that our regular incar audio is pretty rough and I'm not very computer savy with windows movie maker, but it was fun.

I'm no multimedia professional, I don't play one on TV, and I didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night; but I enjoy playing around with cameras and audio when I get the chance.

One thing you can do, if you want really good in-car audio, is to get a cheap digital voice recorder (like what a reporter or someone dictating things would use), strap it to a roll-bar or 3M tape/DualLock it to the dash or a panel somewhere, then just merge that audio with whatever video you've got. Lots of times (especially with the GoPro, in my experience) the audio quality is pure crap, so you can bring some really neat noises to your video with minimal investment.

It's not rally, only cone-squashing, but that's what I did for the following video. The run with the camera mounted on the side of the rear fender has the audio from the camera, but all the others were from inside, with the microphone either up by the rearview mirror, or on the dash near the center vents (I can't actually remember anymore).

I think the only reason that the audio sounded OK in from that particular camera angle is because 1) it was out of the wind for the most part, and 2) it was directly affixed to the body panel using some 3M outdoor double-sided tape, which let the body itself transmit a lot of noise directly to the camera housing.

I tested doing a video and audio recording on my motorcycle, and it seemed that with the audio recorder securely mounted under the passenger seat (and not rubbing against anything) I got very clean sound, a bit of engine spinny noise, plenty of exhaust noise, and very little wind noise. If I mount the camera to the crankcase, I get only a little exhaust noise, but you can hear the internal whirring of the engine and it still leaves a good impression of engine speed.

So, depending on where you mount a microphone, you could pick up a lot of rock/debris from hitting the underbody and washing the other noises out, or you could get a lot of wind noise (unlikely since windows are normally up), or you could get some really sweet engine noises. In some of my cars, the sweet spot for picking up engine noise seems to be just behind where the dash meets the windshield.

I'm looking forward to more cool vids!

Better yet. It's a pretty simple procedure to rig up an external mic to the camera. There are a couple of youtube how to's. Use a plug from radio smack and you can leave the mic in the rally car but still have the removable camera.

Jorden, try this for the bike

that was pretty good. if i were to do helmet cam anymore I'd consider it. but my video from helmet cam makes me look like some bobble-headed ADD suffering moron. i keep turning my head to look at and keep track of other traffic and look for cops and murderers in cars, lol!!

I do have a pretty nifty wireless mic that im going to try inside my helmet someday though.

About 3 hrs using windows movie maker.

Jorden, that was good audio. On your last run it looks like you were cooking. Go pro's are a catch twenty two- I like the wide angle, hate the audio. They make anyone look fast, and that's good and bad. I perfer the conventional camera angle, that way you can tell a 2 is a 2 and when your fast your fast and when your slow, your just plain slow. we use two cameras- one behind us facing forward, one on the far right of the dash board facing back( which is the audio that we always use). My codriver usually puts our videos together and does a good job, I just figured I'd make something for the pure fun of it. Here's his video from stage one Waste Management one, which is our usuall incar audio.

smiling smiley dang, that looks like a really fun stage!!

What do you do when you catch up to someone in dust like that? I remember two or three years ago working at LSPR it was super super dry, and in the first stage (gravel pit) it seemed like an entire freakin' white-out. Do you just focus on what you actually can see closer to you, ljust keeping off of the plants and grass at the shoulder, and just trust the notes to let you know where to go?

around 11:40-ish, was that a fade into the audio of the front-facing camera?

I was finally starting to get traction with the sun out; heats 1 and 3 got nice dry weather, and heats 2 and 4 (the ones I was in) got rained on a bit.

*sigh* I need to watch more videos like that, it might prompt me to get off my ass!!
