Watching the video. The B-Pillar pretty much kept the driver/co-driver's heads from sticking outside the car. That's some sketchy rolls though.
But some of these turns... guys just seem to go straight off a turn? I know one you posted grant is a solo guy, but two that I know of with co-drivers where people are going WAAAAAAY too fast for the turn and just seem to drive straight off the road instead of turning. But it looks like a lot of the energy was being lost rolling the car, which is a good thing. I still don't know how they didn't land on some big rock that would go through the holes in the cage... Never, never under estimate the power of shit house luck.
Multiple hits scrub speed and energy, dirt is softer than trees. A solid hit on any of those big boulders would have likely changed the outcome. Oddly enough his engineered duffy doorbars actually are longer than proper ones...thusly weighing more. Funny. BUT..he wins, he walked and obviously he was correct in his cage design.. ![]() |

Which has been a common enough problem with the open wheel and home built cars that there are rules about having a throttle return lever you can lift with your foot. Doesn't help when there's only milliseconds between this and AWE!!! I have been very public in my scrutinization of PPIHC entry allowances this year. There were multiple drivers who's experience ended at autocross and track days that were in >500 hp vehicles. I have more high speed experience than any of those people, as well as experience at Pikes Peak and I wouldn't show up with anything more than 300 hp on my first year. I even suggested that the organizers tell those entries that if they wanted to bring their cars, they needed to recruit an experienced driver. Matthew Johnson, Ramana Lageman, Todd Moberly, Stephan Verdier, Leon Styles, Lauchlin O'Sullivan, Eric Burmeister, and so many more that have real experience and experience on Pikes Peak. I understand when a shop wants to use the event to showcase their abilities, but just tossing any driver into these cars that are way faster than the average brain is not a good idea. But what do I know... It was fun watching how fast they could delete my posts on their facebook page though. Grant Hughes |

Grant, didn't you see you goof-ball? He's an Engineer, so he knows cages. I also saw that he was Team Captain of some such horseshit for FSAE team at some shitty Texas cowfawking U in 2006. Which means this genius is basically fresh out of college arguing with everybody..another 20 something year old who knows everything. He must be right. Seriously, must be an enormous idiot in real life, scary that he has the web-site, the attitude, the talk, and knows everything at 2_, and in reality he's mentally deficient. Would it help to have a "selective entry" process for PPIHC? i think so. They used that system at CTTC, and there were no (to my knowledge) serious accidents. Is there a farm system to cultivate inexperianced drivers to prepare them for the big race? If not this will keep happening, which is non of my concern.

They have a selective entry process as well as a qualification process where drivers that are not fast enough during practice on lower mountain (qualifying which determines start order). They said things like they were not accepting entries from people that couldn't show they could deliver a car that could perform.
There used to be the Colorado Hill Climb Association which has a Juniors class and Sportsman class and others that could act as feeders and prep for PPIHC back when it was all gravel. Now however... What they will eventually need is a power restricted novice class and alot of scrutiny of the existing rulebook to ensure safety rules are up to international standards. Dave and Allison spent much of the week arguing over their FIA belts legality as they were >2 years old. The rule book says belts must be certified and less than 2 years old. Doesn't say who they have to be certified by or anything along that line. Anyway you look at it, this was a serious lesson year for Pikes Peak. When you have to call in Flight for Life four times during an event, something needs to be changed. So grateful and almost feel like it's a miracle that no one died this year... Grant Hughes |

Time Attack has historically been the place where rally cars have been run (since the rally classes failed to show up in sufficient numbers to keep those classes alive). I "know" the road, but I like having my navvie with me since we both pour so much time/energy/effort/$ into our car. That said, road race cars seem to be prepped for the driver's survival and there was less bracing on the navvie side. Hmmm. Honestly, I think having a navvie is really helpful up there, especially for the novice driver. I don't know what happened in the car (missed note, or missing note), but to me it looks like they committed to a cornering speed for the first half of the turn, neglecting to realize that the corner tightens up in a big way. Seeing some of the crashes from this year makes me wonder how many years PPIHC has left before it gets the boot.
In the good ol days on dirt, you get a little bit sideways, go a bit wide and you scrub off speed before you have a real nasty off, or get it back together again (mostly). Now with it being all blacktop that moment between being in control and going off is even tighter - like when an F1 car lets go. No gradual loss of grip, just SNAP!, gone. What a clown. I read the thread. No clue about safety minimums or current practice with a dismissive attitude. Lucky he isn't dead. Seeing his helmet all exposed with no roof and a crushed side lateral gave me the willies.
Nothing like cone dodging and track days to get you ready, and the comment about the Hoosiers was priceless. "Talk about drugs. Yep. An discussion of the arrogance of the educational system, and the class called "the Underdeprived" might be enlightening, but still what is sanctioning body supposed to do with this kind of idiot?
