Black River Stages.. any Canadians?
August 24, 2012 09:05AM
Hi All,

we've submitted our entry for BRS, been planning to do this one for a while, but Targa Newfoundland has got in the way foir the last 4 years... this year we're staying home from Targa. We're doing BRS instead of Defi, just to mix things up a little...

Any other Canadians going? Or been in the past? From what I can tell from Supps, we just need to purchase a NASA membership, our CARS logbook and licenses will be accepted. Can anyone comment?
Any other issues doing NASA events that we might not have thought of? (BTW I have emailed Anders and Amy, and left VM for Amy but they are both starangly quiet... probably busy with another event or maybe taking a vacation?)

What else can anyone tell me about BRS? From the vidoes I've seen it looks to be pretty smooth and pretty techincal, can anyone confirm, deny? Any water crossings? What sort of tires will be required? (I'll likely use whatever I have that still has tread but it would be nice to know what the ultimate would be in case I find a pile of $100 bills :-)). Are the roads private, or township? Do they rut up or not?

And... anyone know of any cabins not listed on the BRS website that are close? I've called all that are listed (and close) and evenrything is full. I've found rooms in Govuenaur but I'd like to be closer if possible.

Thanks...Martin

The roads for the most part that I can remember do not rut up, although there is maybe two stages that see rutting on the 2nd day. The roads are township owned I believe.

No water crossings. Goosepond the 2nd day has some big jumps.

The roads are pretty good at BRS, embedded rocks aren't an issue except where marked as don't cuts etc but someone always manages to pull something out of the weeds. The only place that tends to rut is the last mile of Jayville depending on the weather. Tidd had a water splash due to heavy rains flowing over the road one year but nothing else. Most of the jumps on Goose pond kick and you can not gap the double jump at the end of the stage, it's best to take it easy there. Texas is my favorite.

Thanks for the info, especially on the jumps. Hopefully someone can show us where in the notes this double jump is so we can mark them appropriatly... no recce is a first for us :-)

When you say they "kick" do you mean they kick ass, as in they are awesome, or they kick the car in some way? In general are the landing areas good? I.e. can you take the jumps fast and land safe or do you need to "know" each jump?

Thanks...Martin

The kicker is a raised culvert crossing. There is a jump down and some others that jump up and over crests. Here are some vids.

big jump mid stage

double before big jump at end.

Now I see the kick you are referring to :-)

Those small double jumps look like they can really upset the car! Road look awesome though!

Thanks again...Martin.

Speaking of, I found some threaded collars for DMS stuff. Heading to shop now and will try to remember to check if 50 or 40 fitment.

Good question, I'm struggling with how these can be anything other than an "orphan" solution, which I specifically didn't want. With the 50mm Bilstein's not coming your way I have a bit of a conundrum. Did "plan A" progress at all? I should give you a call...

Yeah I'm heading out to pick a ball mill to finish some clamping plates for pulling the eyelet off these here 50mm shocks I have a few of, next is strip down some, weld tops, drop off at chrome plater.
Blake Lind in Portland Whorey-goon got some brand new units for cheep and found some rubber stoppers to poke in for the plating process..
The news I heard was now "predicted arrival" for the complete 50s in "sometime in October" and the costs are looking grim for this, so I'm preceeding on the old original plan.

We have to have replacement inserts....somebody in marketing doesn't quite grasp that concept.

People have tried. The video is being shot at the top of the third jump in the sequence. Trying to gap it ends up a little short or facing the second jump and then noise straight into the third. Not taking the jump correctly for the second time at 5:10

That second video's angle does not do the end of that stage justice. Those jumps seem a whole lot bigger when you're in the car. Glad you guys are coming down. I prefer no recce. I used your incar video for recce for Tall Pines 2 years ago. Shame that Tall Pines falls on U.S. Thankgiving weekend now.

We're really looking forward to it! Oddly enough it's one of the closest rallies to us, less than 2 hours from my house, we've just never been able to make it before. You're not the first to have used our in-car video instead of doing recce, some have even made notes using them.
