Wait? So did you go from wanting to build a 328is to building a Volvo then? Seems to me that the two M3's at Olympus did pretty decent this weekend. Without the 40 second time penalty, had he been in Nationals, Derik Nelson would have taken 3rd place behind Duplessis and ACP. How many years has it been since he competed and how many events has he driven this car? Oh yeah, this is it's first outing and first for him since 2006. Anybody know what happened to Sean's XR? Looks like DNF on final stage? Bummer. What about the Hintz BMW? I heard something about a broken knuckle? Oh yeah, results as I like to look at them, which is as if it were a Max Attack event. http://www.daronhume.com/rally/combine.php5?rally_id=olympus&rally_id_override=&rally_year=2012&start_stage=&end_stage=&watch_cars=&ignore_cars=&class_alias=&class_filter=G2%2C2WD%2CG5&stage_skip= Grant Hughes Edited 1 time(s). Grant we know you're all on the BMW bandwagon but you have to admit---well you don't have to but you could---that the Derik and DaveK and Dave Hintz builds are quite a bit more expensive than a simple Volvo/Xratty build, and that any little problems like smashing a door or a hood will be exponentially more 'spensive. For not really any huge advantage in performance. Initial purchase xxx % more build xx more damage inevitably...xxx% more Arno thought about it and made the smart choice. I will beat up on the Volvo and learn, then eventually, maybe, perhaps, will build the Bimmer (that chassis is awesome, power is great...etc) but in the mean time I have a long learning curve, and it would be kinda of fun to see what I can do with a 99HP volvo, driving skills vs powering skills....then I'll combine both......
![]() The Bimmer did super well at the Nor'Wester, we did not push too hard but we had some good fun!!! Here is a little clip (first video ever posted)... Arno "Sideways get you there Faster" |

I will actually fully disagree, 100%. Yes, their builds are more expensive than a simple Volvo/Xratty build. They're also more expensive than a simple 325 or 328 BMW build which would be about equivalent to any simple build, but has easier upgrade paths and there are more of them in the junkyard and NEW parts are still available. I can get a new hood ($150) or new fender ($30) right now, today, at a local Certifit for the BMW. I can't get a new anything for the Merkur and I will have to buy used from somewhere and pay for shipping to get it here. I paid $300 more for my 325i than I did for my Merkur. I HAVE spent more than Dave Kern on the Merkur than he has on the BMW. Grant Hughes |

So you're saying you can bang in a decent gearset into the BMW box for a few hundred, and for a n.a. car, a 4.88 or 5.1 axle ratio for a few bucks---so that the POS ahas some acceleration roughly like a OK Xratty or Volvo. Who cars if the junk yards have stock weak with 4.25 first, wide ratio boxes boxes and 2.83 diffs? YOU spent more but lots of that was you trading money for time. You spent an awful lot on motor bits you didn't have to, wasn't it? by the way you ever sell all that 16v stuff? And I could run circles around the Merkur...that is...if we pushed it outside so there were room to drive all the way around it. ![]()
Leave the "crappy" gearbox and just deal with the fact that when racing you'll use gears 2-5 instead of 1-4. Sure a close ratio 5 speed would be nice, but not necessary for all but one or two drivers in the US. IMO, the Supra diff change was a waste of both time and money - I would never recommend it to anyone for a BMW build evAr. I was of the opinion that I'd want gearing so that the car would max at 120mph. With the broad torque of the straight 6, that's turned out to be not nearly as necessary as if I were running a turbo 4 cyl or a high strung N/A 4cyl. With some regularity you can find BMW medium case diffs with 4.1 and there is a 4.27, but that's fairly rare. Dave Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/24/2012 02:58PM by DaveK. |

Well... The custom work happened very quickly! What I remember is we were on stage one, I remember thinking to myself take it easy this is your first stage. Well As we started The car felt good like it would do anything I wanted it to do so I hammered the gas, we were hitting turns ok so I thought I could handle the speed. lol big mistake! We came to a down hill left hand turn and I was flyin into it and went a bit sideways into the ditch all I thought was to hit the gas and try to pull out. It seemed to work only I ended up in the opposite side ditch and driving straight to a big ass tree. My only reaction was to not hit the tree straight on if I was going to hit it, so I cranked the wheel and hit the gas. I managed to get turned enough to avoid the front but took a really good hit to the side. The impact spun us around back onto the road and the first thing I thought was to just keep going. I believe first thing I said and did was "I got this" and I started the car up and took off. I learned the hard way, I was going way to fast! after that I felt really relived because now I didn't have to wonder what hitting a tree was like anymore and got the inevitable over first thing. After that the rally seemed to go well for us, I was much more calm and had a better idea of the speeds I should maintain. The last stage went really good as far as my driving, I felt that I was feeling out the car much better and had a good idea of the point of where it felt squirly. I think when I get proper suspension it will feel even better. But all in all I'm very happy that we finished. Robert did an awesome job of coaching me and making sure I understood ehat was going on.
