If you want coilovers that'll survive rally events, I suspect you'll be replacing a $1200 set on a fairly regular basis.

I had GAB rally struts on my GTX for a while, but blew two inserts in two events and then picked up some DMS.

My recommendation would be to check with JVL as he's probably put together a set for that car at some point in the past. I'm running his Bilstein based stuff on my bmw and they've put up with alot more abuse than the GABs with no issues so far.

Yeah I have a set of diad-er than daid bent, sagging "Que?" Sprouts sitting here that Alex Rademacher killed in his first year with a zero-powered 1.8 fwd Sub-a-rat.. Not pretty and all 4 were bent tubes and bent inserts..
And waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay waaaaaaaaaaaay too short overall length and waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too short travel..

And yeas I've done maybe 3 GTXs and 1 fwd 323..
Interestingly---the knuckle width where the ears fit up are different widths on front and read and different fwd to 4wd, and different bolt spacing..the dirty bastids.

Back in the day before we figured out good struts in the USA we all ran koni, upright Bilstines or GAB's on the GTX till around 1999 DMS started to show up. Since then JVAB and others started making the same inverted strut DMS introduced to us all for less money using a better insert from Bilstine.

I know it is a lot of money to get a proper inverted strut but you will end up there sooner or later. It is more money to get a poor performing short lasting set up first and then pay for a good system...

In the long run reality always wins.

Name and location we want to know who we are talking too. Read the rules

save up for some better stuff than that junk if 1200 is not a good price range
you better be really clever with some tools or this might not be a fun sport for
you if you are alway broken down.

Tell us about the car too dose it run is it caged? what are your plans are you

Well you're guessing wrong.
every single person here has said $1200 for junk is a bad price. They'll bend, they're short--they're poseur-boy asphalt stuff really---and they'll fail.
$600 for junk that fails is a bad price.

And seriously, you should have kept the 240 Nissan....easier car to live with since parts can be found and other parts swapped in. And they're not a bad car or a bad engine.

EDIT: and when we say name, we mean first and last name..and real location. It makes it feel we're talking to another human.

No no no, what we're telling you is don't waste $1200 on something that's going to break/bend/blow apart on short order. Save your $$ until you can spring for a legit set of suspension for the car.

Dave
p.s. the 240 would've probably been a better choice for a rally car, check out some of the build threads on them in the construction forum.

ya! I have love for 240's they just need a different kind of love like reinforcements but power motors and parts are no problem.

I'm pretty sure the best suspension for any car is the suspension that you can get and doesn't take forever to get serviced. Thankfully I have other customer projects to work on right now so it doesn't matter too much, other than it being in the way, that my Merkur is immobile due to a missing front strut. Scott's car is about to become immobile too as the borrowed DMS need returned, possibly as soon as Sunday. Hopefully the stuff we sent away back in JUNE will show up again soon. smiling smiley

Sell the GTX and build a good rally car. Eventually you'll get to the point of wanting to win, at which point you'll sell it anyhow and buy and STI or Evo. Then you'll realize that it costs $40k to build and $18k a year to run/maintain to properly rally one of those and you'll either disappear altogether or you'll go and build a good RWD rally car. Like an E36 BMW (ala Dave Hintz, Dave Kern, Derik Nelson) or Merkur (ala me, Sean Medcroft, Colin McLeery, Matt Smith) or Volvo 240 ().

Grant, the bect strut was straightened, I told you there is a crack at the base of the pin. The intention was to find one of the 2 1 lb tubs of Heat Fence so we could TiG it and then turn the weld down so the upper spring seat fits.
Both 1 lb tubs have disappeared.

Scott's suspension will probably ship by Tuesday-Wednesday next week.

It has been an inordinately long delivery on this round, but from the conversations i have had with those with ALL other brands, it actually is about normal, the difference is everything else worth having on a car costs major abouts more from 25% to 200%. I am a one man operation, all the others purport to be Big Kahunas.

You would of course know all this but your hip pose regarding picking up the telephone which you say is too much bother, or you're too cool to answer it doesn't help.
I also have asked that you send the tubes up for what i call "a recall". I have changed how i make the weldment at the bottom and that saves roughly 3/4" overall length, everything else remaining the same...

Again no response.

Maybe you should have tweeted and posted on Facebook.

I'll happily pay the $5-10 for a new tub of Heat Fence if that's the hold up.
Scott will be happy to hear that!
Hopefully the weather stays somewhat decent for the next few weeks. I'd like to roll the Merkur outside on a nice day and spray it down and clean surfaces and paint the interior so I can start reassembly. Our shop is a cold cold cold unit.
