RA had a generous offer for 2012 concerning the RV and/or the sat truck: essentially a retired rally veteran volunteered to drive it to events for free and provide free storage between events at a central US location. ...have no idea why they didn't take advantage of this opportunity to reduce operating costs. Foggy logic?

They had a plan that was going to get the RV to events and at some point years down the road provide revenue for them at the same time. His volunteer efforts would have been in direct competition with this plan.

Unfortunately, the plan fell through and they had to hire a Teamster to drive the RV.

RA just needs to look at Ojibwe to see how price sensitive the competitors are. Ojibwe basically priced themselves out of the regional market in the last year they were a national event. Once they lost national, they had to rethink the event and rework the roads to reduce their costs and get fees back in line with what competitors were willing to pay.

Also, RA survives on the back of volunteers.

People are willing to go volunteer to serve food at a soup kitchen, nobody volunteers to work the counter at McDonalds.

George, name names.
people have names, whoever it was volunteered, they would have been known, nothing is served by not saying.

Beyond that: screw their truck.

That's exactly how the story has went for EVERYTHING they do.

Ryan Douhit (sp?) offered RA they would do TV at no cost to RA. Driving Sports TV would do all the legwork. And at anytime, if RA felt they had gotten their shit together to produce their own show, they'd bow out.

The answer from Fogg? Basically a polite go fuck yourself. Unbelievable.

They asked us to come out to SnoDrift (they would pay to get us there and for the hotels) and to train them on everything we had learned about filming at rally over the past few years. For free.
I said it could be done properly by our team for 8-10k per event, broadcast quality. Youtube could be even cheaper.
I also told them the BEST thing they could do would be to hire Matt Johnston to cover the series for them.

And he'd gladly do it for cheaper (or at a better production quality for the same price) than any of their shitty, inept marketing stooges could I'd reckon.

I'm not one to wish ill on a rallying organization, but on a for profit business, I have no problem with especially if people are being rude ignorant asses. I've always wondered what would happen if all of the events from RA went NASA. The organizers of the events could run their own "national" championship, and it'd be virtually no different than it is now. Except there wouldn't be $1600 national entry fees herp-derp.

And it would be somewhere near $30k cheaper for the organizer too based on new pricing.

Looks like I need to update my RA v. NRS Google spreadsheet...

It's because RA is a media company, not a motorsports company. Why would they outsource themselves? US rally can't support media promotions, there is not enough rally to promote.

FYI...my post was a made-up tongue in cheek snipe based on FB posts between Fogg and Kirk Garretson about Kirk offering to do live Rally Radio for Olympus, only to be turned down so that RA could fail to organize their own coverage and end up with nothing.

Don, I realize ALL of rally need volunteers, but RA seems particularly oblivious to this fact. When they're turning down volunteer services just so they can pay (ultimately w/ competitors money) to have similar, or often WORSE, services it's pretty obvious they don't understand.

Makes me warm and fuzzy on the inside (Anders has mentioned it before) that RA and NASA did NOT join together when they have had the chance. As for $30k, that's what, only an additional 18.75 entries needed to break even at $1500 a national entry? Pft, pocket change! eye popping smiley

Sure, a marketing company, then.

Whether it's a whim, a fad, or a serious business, makes no difference on this point. It's not working, regardless.

chicken egg thing I guess

to get more rally, you need more exposure, but to get more exposure you need more rally

imo instead of trying to squash any and all "outside" media (no matter how small) they should be asking anyone and everyone who could possibly be interested to please come, please take pics, please take video, please do radio and help us get the word out about rally anywhere and everywhere possible

with the reach of social media through the internet, if everyone's FB and Google+ and youtube channels were showing up everywhere all the time from excited people who are trying to also market themselves, then maybe sponsors would be a little more likely to step up because they'd actually seen our sport out there

but when they try to control everything, nothing seems to happen, those sponsors aren't looking at the ra page, but I bet they have their own kids as friends on their own fb page and if they kept seeing this car or that or this video link or that with "AWESOME" attached

use the internet and the fans to promote your cause, sure you won't have the rights, but free publicity should be used to it's full advantage
