Spectating Dakar 2014??
December 11, 2012 01:43PM
Thinking about taking a few months off in about a year and driving to South America to spectate the Dakar rally.

I've driven all over South America back in 1990, so I do have some experience there. The border crossing and shipping issues and solutions are well documented on the endless overland travel sites. But does anyone have any experience with the actual event and following it for two weeks? Does anyone know somebody that has been there as support or competitor that might have some insight into how to spectate the event?

Call up Ben Slocum. He raced in it last year.

I usually spectate by standing kinda in the direction of what I want to see, and these days I usually squint....In the desert if I see a dust cloud billowing I;ll follow it to where it starts and squint there and that's usually where the thing (car/bike/truck) I want to see is..
In South America I think the biggest problem will be avoiding distractions close up..this is a common everyday scene anywhere in Argentina and it can divert the eyes so you don't see the caros o camiones.

And rally guys have their fans and cheerleaders, here's some Saenz fans--see the background banners:

They're everywhere.

I know that this problem would be the biggest problem spectating for me..

There were several roller derby girls working the Big White rally.

Thanks for the funnies John. I've been down there before and spent 5 months in Brazil and another three months touring the west coast. Lots of girlies around.

Back to Dakar though...

Post up again next year. I feel a midlife-crisis, trip-of-a-lifetime in my near future. Will split all costs. Can speak spanglish and know how to negotiate with hookers.

If it's in South America it ain't Dakar no matter how much the marketing people say it is.

Hmmmmm..... lawyers and marketing people: which are at the bottom of the pond scum?

Well Jens, how about if I go see the awesome event that is known by the name "Dakar Rally". Plus, I have no desire to travel to Africa or the Middle East. None. But I've been to South America and found it easy and fun.

Don't have anything but negativity? Leave the topic alone. At least John posts T&A.

T&A!!???
Those are ordinary daily street scenes down there, what any person would expect to see every block you walk...
In a fit of modesty I refrained from the juicy piccies of Argentinian chicas I found. Lordy!

Fuck off.

I have a better idea. Take the Australian round of the WRC and run it in Japan, but still call it the Australian. WRC event.

Better yet would be to run the East African Safari in Alaska.
