So there is an allowance for a turbo with 28mm restrictor? is that what I'm reading?

If you're a washed up Hex-treme STAR, yes.

Mirra ran at least the Team O'Neil winter rally in a N/A Impreza. He also ran one or two Canadien events using the same car (forget whether VT Car put the turbo back in for those events or not) before R-A gave him the go ahead to run a turbo at their events.

There is no "official" allowance for a 28mm restrictor for novice competitors. Those were "special" arrangements given to competitors with prior motorsports experience - who also spent a lot of time getting professional rally instruction prior to competing in their first event.

Not exactly on the original question, but anyone else come across this sucker? Turbo map for it's here. Not an inexpensive option (okay, for rally over here it's pretty ridiculous) but a hell of a lot more affordable than the TR30R.

No, never ever looked at a turbo that costs $5,230.70.

I know nobody who ahs ever considered a turbo that costs $5,230.70

Most guys won't consider a motor which costs $5,230.70

But...but...it's got "SUPER ultra high flow". Not high flow, not ulta high flow, not even just plain old super high flow. The "SUPER" is in all caps so that's even better!

I'm working on something at work right now where the block itself is more than $5,230.70, and it's not even for racing, just bragging rights to get a certain number on a timeslip.

Nothin' wrong with that, either, but it highlights a lot of differences. And the drag racers aren't nearly as bad as the circle track guys, $50k an engine for amateur racing?

I am talking bout typical clubbie guys in RALLY. After Merkur owners and the "20 something living in mommy's basement virgin " searching for the elusive "B cam for $5" on Turbopricks,

clubbie rally guys are cheapest

See this 'un? That's around a $5000 block I'm holding casually with one arm

Too bad for $5000+ they couldn't call the insane Irishman who paid for it and ask "Which position dya want the rearmost headbolt? BDA or BDG position? " and then drill and tap it......

Guess when I discovered it.

Yeah, well, there's a reason I said it's pretty ridiculous for rally over here. But I mean hell, even over here there's people who shell out for stuff like TR30Rs so whatever. I just thought it was interesting that it's in the catalog as a normal thing now instead of special order super secret squirrel stuff.

Sounds like "Oh, you wanted oil returns for a WET-sump block? You shoulda said something..."

That particular one could have been a lot worse. Could've been in the car and started and then killed the bearings after it pumped all the oil into the valve covers with nothing but a teeny tiny hole for it to drain back through, with all of the crankcase blowby fighting past the other way... Maybe it even would have lived until the first time you used the engine and developed large amounts of crankcase pressure and didn't notice the oil pressure fall off...

No in the deck there were 9 headbolt holes drilled and tapped.
But 10 holes in the head, 10 studs....

Bottom end was assembled and I'm running the studs in 1-2-3- to 10 uh 10 Uh Wot da fock 10 errrrr

No hole. Pull pistons, rods and crank out, don to the machine shop and level it out and locate hole position, drill into new $5000 block, tap.

next fun discovery was the crank was a RS200 Evo spec with a tiny bit more stroke, so when do you suppose I discovered that the rods rammed into the block....... way late...

And of course according to the Irishman who was hiding the whole project from his wife "You should have checked first!!!" Checked first on an engine built in series of maybe 1800 units ever...
