Olympus Rally: Notes or no notes
December 28, 2012 01:16PM
The Olympus Rally will be offering recce. It will probably be in the open format as we have used in the past, but we may do two-pass instead (to be consistent with how most other events that offer recce do it).

Should we offer notes as well?

If offered, the costs for the notes would be just under $200/set.

Is this something that teams want? This question is primarily for teams that plan on running Olympus.

I dunno. Seems like if they's recce, notes are superflous. I'm kinda biased though, last time we ran on notes I wrapped my car round a tree. I just hope to hell we can run this rally, any way at all...

Jay was your wrapping the car around the tree due to a fault in notes or something else?

I've always been fond of the NorthWest-Style Routebook that tells us where to go on stage + gotchas.

I would rather write my own but I could see that some teams may want to opt for the $200 for a set of notes. I could see offering as such.

a) Route book. Included in entry fee.
b) 2 pass recce, write your own notes. Small fee ($50?).
c) Set of organizer provided notes. $200. Extra fee for a 2nd copy.
d) Want notes and recce? b+c

After doing 2 events in Canada this year, I could see doing away with the arrows on the stages to make set up and take down faster for the volunteers. While useful when you get lost, there are ways to make up for that if you do recce and notes.

Arrows on stages are very beneficial for advance and sweep, emergency vehicles, people who get lost in their notes or route books or beginners who don't know how to do it correctly...not to mention the occasional car sick co-driver who can't function at times.

Funny that they manage to muddle through all that in Canada.

The Canadians use arrows. I have set them up.

I prefer to write my own notes. Two pass recce is a good value.

I ran PFR and Big White this year (2012). The only arrows are for cautions. No arrows for instructions. You are free to watch my in-car video to see that there are no instruction arrows on stage, if you like.

I'd buy the notes. Writing your own is a pain in the ass. 1 pass with notes is fine.

Gene,

Yes I have, many times. (Echo) Without recce at some events. 100% better than Jemba notes.
Ask Bill about them. He can give you the scoop too.

We're only one turn from the win....

Just have to push a little harder...

You could have won at Mt Hood with 110 horses if you'd held it to the floor longer and used the brakes less...

More like....

We're only ever one turn from disaster but here we are blasting away through the trees...

We push it for all it's worth.....

Alas.... We needed more time to get engine management right.

Sucks about the soda straw.
