You have to have the cars set that high?

This is an important one: how much droop travel ?
As in when you jack the car, how many inches before the wheels are in the air?

318 fitment (85-84) as he has an early 318'
Fronts: OUTSIDE DIAMETER OF TUBE: 51mm - P 36 136 , 45mm - P 30 128
Rears: B 36 2028

The larger diameter fronts would typically occur by using M20 motored (drei twa fuenf) cars rather than M10s. IIRC, there is NOT a valving change for the heavier cars. The iX Fronts are different, but the rears are the same.

-Sorry I've been doing E30s almost as long as John has been bitching about Volvos.

Good more experience.
Notice how high the car is..
Me seems to recall they usually aren't that high.
I also recall that cars OEM replacements have about 125-145mm travel

Hey just thought, maybe you can answer easier:
do you have a measure from say bottom of the knuckle (where the ball joint hits its usually a nice flat surface) up to say the top surface of the top mount?

At some point we're going to want to know what the starting point was in terms of OAL..
And a piccie of the relationship of tire to strut body would be nice cause the distance from hub face where the wheel hits to centerline is fixed in old school struts like those or most old rwd cars where the bottom tube is welded into the bottom forging...

This is usually a pain im heck weisst du!


EDIT. just checked and my list from just a little North of BRD show P36-0135...and vavling 300/120, not bad but that is shown as Clubsportracing patron...and when they say racing, they always mean "roadracing"...like short travel..
Rear they show Bak Clubsportrace stötdämpare 260/120 B36-0604

We need more info.

The Sport dampers are shorter stroke than that of the HD's. The sports were to be used with "lowering [harshening]" springs, wereas the HD's are for stock ride height. Pretty sure your numbers are for the sport variant. It is my understanding that the HD's used the same shim stack/valving, so rates should be similar. Either way, I agree that the strokes are too short.

As I'm mainly in to vintage AWD BMWs, I don't have a good RWD canidate to measure right now. I would have to go hunting through factory literature to see if that dim is provided. If someone has a "built up" spare boinger, you should be able to pick up this measurement off car.

EDIT: Found the spring tables. Dependant upon what was on his 318 vs what is installed, BMW had provisions to gain up to 21mm just in spring swap. This can be coupled with thicker pads, 3mm nominal stock, upto 9mm available, for a total of 33mm of suspension gain in the front. The E34 springs should (Willy Von K - did you ever put the ones I gave you on?) fit the E30 uppers and lowers as well, and are longer statically, as well as stiffer.

My E30 is a 325, but a previous owner installed H&R lowering springs and Bilstein Sport shocks. The Sport shocks definitely have a shorter stroke, otherwise the rear springs would fall off their perch at full droop.

It looks 'cool' and handles okay on tarmac, but I'd really actually prefer to have the car back at its OEM height.

sometimes i miss my 325IS. Didnt like the steering very much, and was nose heavy feeling, but overall was enjoyable as a car.
