I also much prefer the look of the two doors. From a practicality stand point four doors wins out. Much better access and a wider selection of years to choose from. I am looking at this from the perspective of a first time builder. I am looking for the least amount of work and problems. Getting an automatic increases the probability that the car wasn't abused and you need to do the T5 swap anyways.
What reason is there to not buy a newer car that already has the bigger motor with modern fuel injection? Robert. "You are way too normal to be on Rally Anarchy." Eddie Fiorelli. |

Correct rear end stock on older ones. Not so much now but price. I'd buy it for 250 even if it becomes the daily driver. Grant Hughes |

The one thing about 2 doors is Volvo stopped importing them sometime in the early 80s. That means you better find some spare doors for the inevitable...they're out there.
later injection is easy. Yank it out and plug it in, little to no thought just pluggin in stuff. Bigger engine can be bought as $100 core and built once the one that comes with the car ain't funnn-enuff... That gives one the opportunity to go and select the best parts like a B23 bottom end and a B234 16v head, or a "late" B230 with 16 v head... One nice thing with earlier cars is the much higher chance of no sunroof, no electric window winders, much less extraneous loom for all the BS that is cut out of a rally car.. the advantage of the 4 door cars is they made them up to 92---more doors for replacing those stove in by smackin into stumps and embankments John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Oh IF you get an early car, when it is time for suspenders, pull the struts off as late a car is possible to get the spindles with the bigger wheel bearings to base the suspension on... the changeover was around 79...
MUCH MUCH later cars with the ABS front calipers have one hose inlet rather than 2---otherwise the same as previous vented ones. You can actually bleed these in less than 2 hours. assuming one doesn't want the Sooooooper Bitchin 11.75" x 1.25 Willwood Superlite set up which is really Soooooer Bitchin. Slapping the more modern fuel injection onto an older Volvo is a little more complicated then John leads on ( not throwing you under the bus). Yes computers plug in, but there are a million little things that will have to be done too. If you go for the lh2.4 route, you will have to swap to the later style diff and electronic speedo. You could also run an older throttle body to bypass the idle air control valve which needs the speedo input to idle correctly. I'm also referencing 4 different wiring diagrams and three manuals to sort everything out on my car. If you were going the turbo route down the road, I would purchase a later 240 that already has that injection system. You then just swap computers and extend 6 wires. Simple. Also, be very very cautious of info from turbos bricks. Most of the stuff they do over there is pretty hacked together, not something you want on a rally car. |

And the trans and diffs are maybe the most underdeveloped parts of the underrated car.. I would touch one myself..box and diffs and stuff is what it is and that's it... At least with a Ford 4x4 a person has a chance to upgrade all that stuff if or when they choose with a huge variety of makers and configurations... Remember Mats Jonssons times a couple of years ago at the Swedish National in conjunction with Swedish WRC in what is an ancient 97 spec Escort Cosworth? 4th and 5th SS times on polished and rutted roads in an ancient car....don't see any Bavarian Maggot Wagons Eye Hex EVER do anything like that... I was being sarcastic. Shirley, you must recall that guy on ss.com a few years back that was saying just that. Now the e36 BMW on other hand. I got a nice clutch LSD yesterday for 60. 364 final so gotta get a 410th or 427, which hopeful to find one cheap but can be had off eBay for lt 200.
If noninjected I'd go with carbs. Grant Hughes |
