I would say that sound methodology comes from your initial training and ongoing education. It is not something that you are born with. There is a small but important difference between being smart and being well trained. Nobody is smart enough or has enough time to develop and apply perfect methodology to each job. This is why experience and education are such huge advantages. It seems obvious but it is worth repeating.

On the whole I agree with Paulinho. Blindly following a procedure without some level of critical thinking is dangerous.

Gene,

I learned a similar lesson early in my career. I did a bearing roll in on a Cat 3412. It was a rush job. Afterwards the engine only had 10 psi of oil pressure at idle. The minimum spec was 9 psi. I asked my boss what we should do. He said it's in spec let it go. Four days later I had the main caps off again. It turned out that the crank had been ground under size. This is very unusual on Cat crankshafts. The only reason I was not disciplined was because of my bosses lack of critical thinking. I learned several lessons. The most important thing I learned was to stop and think if something felt wrong. I can honestly say that this lesson has saved my life on more than one occasion.
