I figured I would throw this out there if anyone is interested. My brother who is tight on cash (two kids and wife) needs a rear brake job on his 08 caravan. Problem is I have the mechanical skills in the family and he received the artist skills. We just live 500 miles apart so I cant really help. Anyway rear pads are metal on metal and he was telling me of someone who quoted him 700 bucks to do it. I think it probably needs just pads and rotors then new fluid. I dont know for sure but the pictures didnt look all that bad. Anyone looking for some cash or know of a shop that wont rip him off that I can send him to? I already priced out parts and there not that much. Last thing... he is located in Ballard if this helps.
Thanks Chris |

He can go see my friend Sam @ The Shop (super nice guy), I don't think he's going to charge him $700 for a brake job!!!

Without fail, every time I have needed parts (or, well, anything) for the Ingersol-Rand compressor in my Mill, it has come to almost-exactly $900. For eight years, every little thing - $900. Well, except the motor-rewind - that was $2700 (hey - multiple of $900!!!) Parfois, on fait pas semblant! I am: I know: I am from: Nobody. Nothing. Nowhere. |

Yeah I once watch a 240 pull out of the shop next door and the guy carried the rotors and pads out to pitch---the vented rotors were shiny in the vents, not a hint of rust of anything, maybe a few weeks old tops, pad were FAT like new, guy ssays "Hey a car comes in its getting new rotors, pads, rebuilt caklipers the whole schmeer..." $700. If the Ballard Brother had the parts in hand and is willing to get his artistic hands cold and dirty, some adult supervision could be considered. This is what I was trying to inform my bro about! 150 in parts and this dude it trying to charge him 700 bucks! I told him if he goes back that he should take a bucket of lube and some advil! Sooweeeee soooweeeee! Thanks for the offer John, it means a lot but I would not want to unleash a project like this on you. Someone needs to do this for him. I only say this being I have tried to help him before and cars are not his thing. It will never be his thing, trust me! ![]() |

Must make a lotta money if he's so busy being an artist he can't save 500/hr..
It's kinda funny , I've had a woman 40 years old ---and drop dead gorgeous, really beautiful, and a fiesty high school senior "illegal high-school girl" both build their own pretty moderately warmed up V4s for their saabs with me suppling the space, the books, the muscle (I taught them about levers), the tea, and certain critically timed tips and advice...all in the most blatant over the top lascivious innuendo---"OOoops in whose end? OH!), and they were great...I hired the "illegal highschool girl"... I asked both the standard questions: Can you read simple declarative sentences? And do you understand when the text says "see photo 4-15 it means a photograph and when it says "See figure 2-9" it means a drawing? And "can you make a fist around a pencil and form crude check marks?" Yep yep yep. Then you can build an engine. And they did, worked good... fast. No previous mechanical anything... A little insight: If your brother called my shop (sports cars and competition vehicles only!) for a quote to repair his Caravan, this is the way I would write it. I normally will not quote a job with out inspecting the car, but lets go with this for the discussion.
Talking to your brother I would likely pick up on the fact that he is not a car guy. Based on this and the appliance type vehicle, I would assume that the car doesn't get much attention. All this is going to make me quote at least pads and rotors. I may even add in a caliper just in case. And a brake fluid flush. And a tire rotation. It's better to quote high and come in under budget than to go over. I would still be taking a risk because it all too easily could be a total shit box that needs EVERYTHING. A couple of minutes on ALLDATA and Worldpac shows me this: Front pads and cut rotors= parts, $162 list. Labor= 1.6 hours. Rear pads and rotors= parts, $237 list. labor= 1.2 hours. Bleed brakes= fluid $10. Labor= 0.9 hours. Rotate wheels= 0.4 hours. Total parts= $409. Total labor= 4.1 hours. Fluid disposal fee= aproximatly $5. Sales tax= 8.9% Remeber, this is only a quote and the prices are list. Plug in a labour rate and you can see how quickly it all adds up. For this amount of money a professional mechanic will inspect your car, replace your brakes, bleed the hydraulic system, rotate the wheels and test drive your car. You also get a warranty, the job completed quickly and legal recourse if something goes wrong. Would you rather pay a shop or have someone fix your brothers brakes in their driveway? A $700 quote doesn't sound too bad. Food for thought. Robert. "You are way too normal to be on Rally Anarchy." Eddie Fiorelli. |

$700 quote at a shop for all four corners (rotors and pads) isn't exorbitant. For just the rear pads and rotors, no calipers, it is. And I'd bet ten bucks that unless the calipers were replaced, the odds of a typical shop bleeding the brakes are about 100 to 1. I had the stealership do the front pads and turn the rotors (which it probably didn't need) on our Toiletta Sienna...$366. Ugh. It's modern, it's under warranty, I don't want to deal with it. But had I known it was that much, I would've done it myself! Based strictly on the info you gave, I would think it would be a $350ish job for the rears even at the Mopar dealer, assuming the calipers are OK. But you really never can tell without seeing it in person, can you? ![]() Andrew Steere Lyndeborough, NH KB1PJY |

Not sure what you mean but..never push a caliper piston back in with out opening the bleeder first and bleeding afterwards. We usually replace calipers with every worn out brake job. Metal to metal creates a lot of heat and metal dust. Caliper pistons over extend and can damage the seals. I'm not about to lose everything I've worked for to do a cheap brake job. I turn away several requests every month to do just pads or shoes. $700 for one axle partial brake job on a Caravan is plain old robbery tho. I do have a quote from the Ford dealer for a basic tune-up on a 96 Ford van. Small block V8 , just over $900. The guy ran and someone sent him to us. Ran about 1/2 for the same stuff and a bit more work. |

Not sure maybe on certain model cars. I have factory shop repair manuals for newer GM and ford cars and they never mention anything about cracking the bleeder screws. Certainly doesn't hurt though, provided you don't get air in the system. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 01/16/2013 11:04AM by czwalga. |
