When you drive back the pistons all the rust, water, rubber and metal bits blow backwards into the master cylinder and or ABS module. This can lead to some very undesired issues. Always best to block flex hose, open bleeder and then push in piston.

Gene is a professional mechanic and he runs a shop. His knowlege and experience is what you pay for.

Say for example, your buddy who does the job in his driveway and who's "education" comes from watching some youtube videos, pushes a slug of metal particles up into the ABS pump. Now what? $700 keeps looking better and better.

GM makes the vehicles... and the engineers write tech manuals to give to the professional mechanics. This is the procedure dealership mechanics follow, not backyard tech.

Not to wallow further in thsi but a point to all you, including Robert.
The question was: Help artistic brah who has worn out the pads and may have chewed rotors.

The guy KNOWS there's the waltz in to anyplace and stand on one foot, rolls the eyes back and say "Like namaste doods, do whatever" (stating thereby that "Money is no object"..
You boys think a for a second and you'll realise you know that he knows that option...

That wasn't the subject, was it?

All this way out-badding each other is so much hoo-ha...

The subject IS, bang on some pads and discs...

I thought the subject was not getting ripped off on a brake job. I say you more or less get what you pay for. If you want a $100 brake job then buyer beware.

You can have it fast.
You can have it cheap.
You can have it good.
You can only get two of the three.

I am not trying to be a dick! I want to point out that you need to be clear about what you want and what you are likely to get.

Well, you learn something new every day. I have done 20+ brake jobs on my own cars over the years and never bled the system. Either I am due to die soon or I should buy a lottery ticket.

HA! Where's the "Thumbs Up!" button on this site?

I have been advocating this for several years, since at LEAST the late-'90s. I only recently saw it actually outlined in a Teves ABS Manual just the other day.

You should be bleeding a biy=t once ayear and purging the whole ssytem every 2-3 years..
You know is so much like water that it has affinity for absorbing water from air, you know that...Where do you think the 4-6% by volume/yr of water goes?

To the lowest point...made of????? Iron...so strong yet simple water dissolves it...big lesson there.

Brake fluid is cheap, bleeding takes just a few minutes if done right---and not hyper-obsessive..

We certainly don't need any more pissing matches on here but...and this is just to educate and not put down anyone.

Steve, factory manuals are written by engineers or technical writers not mechanics. They are written for mechanics who are assumed to have the basic principal, skills and procedures already established. Factory manuals are full of mistakes hence the constant need for revisions and TSBs. I'm not a big ego guy and rarely take a firm stand without something to back it up. I'm a very successful shop owner, 45 years of working on cars. GM,Chrysler and ASE certs on brakes. I don't know everything but I still learn. It will only take a couple seconds of searching to determine the correct procedure for re-using calipers such as http://www.agcoauto.com/content/news/p2_articleid/202 about 1/2 way down the page or http://autorepair.about.com/library/a/1i/bl836i.htm or even http://www.brakewarehouse.com/brkewrhsefaqs.asp#top66 or any number of authorities.

Now people have certainly just jambed them back in and survived. However just today a car was brought in with brake issues. The guy slammed pads and rotors on his wifes car a couple days ago. Pedal dropped to the floor today. He got his ass chewed and we get to fix it. Improperly done brakes are a potential death sentence. Trying to encourage someone who is not comfortable in doing mechanical work, may not have the proper tools or skills, may not realize the caliper is stuck is at best fool hardy and at worst a lethal mistake.

Someone with proper skills and judgement needs to do the job for safeties sake. The little extra labor cost will be much less than either an insurance deductable or medical deductable.

Soap box put away.

Understand certainly not doubting your expertise, doing more to be extra safe is never a bad thing, just saying i'd say you're in a very small percentage of people who do this, including dealerships.

I have been a professional mechanic my entire adult life. The vast majority of the technicians that I have worked with have been solid, well intentioned and honest. Only a handful have been really bad. I worked at a so called "stealership" and we did very high quality work. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes but I find it ironic that the infrequent mistakes (by volume) committed by the professionals get all the press. On top of that it is far more likely that a business will "make it right" if there was a problem. Your buddy couldn't eat a big bill even if he wanted to.

For you guys laboring under the sadly mistaken belief that factory service manuals are made by the guys who designed the cars--or built them, as a friend who worked at Saab competition Dept as engine builder from 1959-1980 said "If we have an engineer that is even half -awake do you really think we're going to waste him on writing a service book!!???!!
No anybody we send down there is somebody we know we can live without"

Don't know who write US service manuals but I doubt its good engineers, more like the dreaded "injur-nears".
