Forget what he's driving, look at the tires they're allowed to use!
Don't you have some c5s? Mount those on some BMW wheels and I'll test them out this weekend camping.

They are expensive.

What I can see of those C5s is they're intended for studding.. That means hard to hold the studs in...
The normal thing is to glue in the studs, then put pallet loads of tires in an oven and bake 'em, re-vulanize them so they bit the studs, not ideal for snow grip..
On bikes when we would stud the knobbies we'd usually use horrible stiff hard Continentals or Dunflop which we'd never consider for dirt and those that could would do the tires up at least a year ahead of time and let them age---330 studs/tire and was better grip than summer.

My oven could only fit one tire but how long should I cook each one for? Guessing a bit more than a rabbit, bit less than a goat?

They are sold with the studs in the tire or at least that's my understanding. Since we can't run studs, someone pulled them out prior to sale which meant I had to figure out some other studs to run. I picked something close, used special glue, but I think the problem was the stud heads were too wide for the hole in the tire and some lugs ended up tearing and eventually spitting out studs. The C5s are a hard rubber compound, can't understand why anyone would run them without studs.

Dave

Cause somebody sold them to them and said they should.....and they, not knowing shit from Shinola, and not knowing the depth of the cynicism, ran them....they did manage to be me by some few seconds....in Escort Cosworth and Evos---and me on L3 Michelins---second hand.

Does anybody know of a dealer in the US that can get the C5's?

I believe you can get them in a 17" size based on what has popped up in the past after the Sherbroke (sp) races.

We might actually end up with ice this year, so running them at the local rallycross ice events would be fun. Can't find Menards in anything larger than 15" and making my own is not on my list of fun things to do for a weekend.

Thanks,

Kevin Wesley

I was reading through NASA's rules again. It says they allow studded tires at 'designated' winter/snow rallies? Which events would those be?

You could probaby operate on the assumption that you can use studs unless the SuppRegs forbid it.

Really, any event where it's "supposed" to be winter or snowy. If there was, say, a gravel event that was late in the fall, outside of winter, that had a freak once-in-a-centure snow dusting on the night before, studs would not be allowed, since we don't want teams scrambling to go get them studded and the only place in town doesn't have time to do everyone's, so that wouldn't be fair.

So as far as NRS is concerned, any winter rally we do (the last was Team O'Neil Winter) studs are allowed. But to save racers money, they wouldn't have to bring spare studded snow tires everywhere... was it maybe 100AW a couple years ago where they had a weirdo snow?

And... you should see the studs we allow on the motorcycles! smiling smiley

Bad policy Anders. If someone is smart enough to bring along studded tires in anticipation of snow, they should be allowed to run. Just like if you are smart enough to put on lights at service anticipating stage delays prior to the next service. It is strategy and should not be stifled.

Your analogy is good but normally the supps mention something about tires. Organizer wouldn't change the supps overnight! Why do we need to complicate things, no wording allowing studs then no studs period.

Look at that super advanced rear suspension setup. That's how you get to first in class and second overall in Sweden. winking smiley

The fact that he's been a top driver for the last 13 years didn't help anything.

On a side note his wife did the hardwork!

Anywhere out there showing what the rear suspension does look like? I mean, I know there's more than one way to skin a live axle, though I also know the assumption's going to be long 4-links.
