I don't know why I put this in this section...But just to stay on topic: I'm torn between doing an FWD Civic, or a RWD 79-93 Mustang with IRS swapped in. I want to be competitive in the central region events eventually, and I feel like the FWD will be faster once I learn how to drive it properly.

why bother with IRS? Plenty of folks across the pond go faster with a truck axle than most here. Stangely enough, my plans look very similar: Build (w turbo 2.3, T5, Toyota rear end) Volvo 240, Fox Body, or Merkur. (Escort-style 5-link on the volvo/mustang) OR Buy somebody else's Civic Buying somebody else's car and being able to get out on stage sooner than, say, 2018, is starting to sound real appealing. ![]() ![]() http://www.utahrallygroup.com |

Mustang and forget the IRS, just do the LOOOOOOONG link boxes as if it were any other great rwd Ford Stitch weld the hell out of it cause the bodys are barely stronger than corrugated cardboard... And first thing is see what sort of rear wheel travel it has... and if the shocks are canted over stupid for interior room.... two things alone make the Moose-angst better than any fwd platform: gearing in the box and axle is fractions, 1/10 to 1/5 the cost, and it will ultimately be more simple mindless fun.. The learning is the same, its the hardware that differs and junk to junk both stock fwd and rwd are junk, but prepped to prepped they're both good, and your job is the same (moving weight around for grip---that's why you want 8-9" travel in back) Oh, don't fall into the V8 folly, more than enough power can be had in a 4 cylinder and there are some truly wonderful 4 cylinder Fords---that just happen to weigh about 218lbs , which is more than 300lbs less than the V8-----which can do wonders for the critical F/R weight balance. And post piccies of the contents of the time capsule.. Anything that makes our spirits happier is definitely On Topic. That is the whole point of what we're doing in the woods. Trust me, I'm still kicking around the idea of buying yours. A project doesn't scare me though...My friends and I have been building some pretty serious Mustangs(drag cars) for years now. The good thing with Civic is they're basically the Fox-body mustang of the FWD import world...So there's a massive aftermarket and parts are everywhere. |

John, I've already priced 2.3 Duratec motors for if I do a Mustang. I can get one complete with reasonable miles for $5-600 out the door. A 4.0L trans out of the Rangers/Explorers is a direct bolt-up and has slightly better ratios than the 2.3 trans.
Not sure what you mean with canted shocks? Here's a picture of my last drag car which had shocks in the stock location: ![]() They tilt it a hair, but that's about it. I'd definitely have to modify the upper mount to fit a nice sized coilover in there. They make stock-location coil-overs for drag cars, but they don't have much travel...We had a very hard time getting them to work(launching on a glass smooth track). Also, here's an idea of the travel the stock-style rear end has. This is running chrome-moly control arms, spherical rod-ends, no sway bar, and 26" tires: ![]() ![]() |

Oh, I saw your's after the cage was all in and thought you modified it. Well, I'd have to open a Mustang's up similar to a factory Merk's then...The stock shock mount is designed to clear the shaft of a factory sized shock, not any sort of coil-over setup. It's not really a big deal, it's all pretty easy to get to. |

Other thing is that the lower mount hanging way low like that is guaranteed to get hammered to death drooping down like that.. I like to position the shock mount on the rear somewhere between 3 o'clock and 1 o'clock (seen from driver's side) that was nothing can touch it unless it gets thru the axle tube.. Well, the IRS out of an 03-04 Cobra is pretty much a bolt in deal. This pic gives a good idea of clearance...Looks pretty flat with plenty of places to mount delrin(or similar) skid plates. I'm pretty sure the suspension has more down-travel than show, that just looks like it's limited by whatever shock is installed:

Bolt in is nice buit man am I wary of IRS. Designers seem to be "too clever' and if there's a short link length somewhere I know it'll bite you in the ass when trying to make travel
Maybeeeeeee tho.. I know they always weigh a fair amount and how will you beef up those aluminum arms if they turn out to be like taffy? See we knopw a well located 5 link rear works 100% hunk dory, just give it some loooooong links for shallow arcs.. Do we know the IRS shit will work and be as strong? Known vs uuuuuuuuuuhhhm, maybe.
