Stuff I've seen wrong (automotive)

I'm sure everyone has some stories. When you do this everyday you get to see more.

Brand new brake pads install metal side to rotor.
Vented calipers cut in two from driving for decades on needing brakes.
Brake lines installed without copper washers.
Stripped caliper mount bolts .
A bazillion broken bleeders.
Brake hoses twisted 360 degrees.
Primary and secondary shoes reversed.
Rotors and drums with big hammer marks and dents.
Springs put on wrong or left out.
Missing self adjusters.
New pads, stuck calipers.
New shoes, leaky cylinders.
Had a car come in with 25 generic flat washers stacked on the wheel studs to clear aluminum wheels.

Ford V8 water pump bolts broke in timing cover (typical ) just add 3 small C clamps to stop leak.
Quadrajet carb with top put on before centering the hanging rods. Top was bent, rods crushed.
A bazillion cross threaded or broken spark plugs.
Obligatory tin cans wrapped around exhaust pipes.
Exhaust hangers bolted solid with no rubber.
Flex couplings missing and complaint of pipe breaking.
Home welded exhaust manifolds that break when removing the bolts.
The old tin foil in the fuse trick.
Missing fuses..just had another one. Heater wouldn't switch to defrost. 3 yr old car. Fuse missing, must have run away 'cuz no one knew how it went missing last week.

Some else throw some in. I gotta go to work.

Years ago I had a family friend come to me complaining about high fuel consumption on his early sixties (don't exactly remember) GMC pickup. I found that he had built his own exhaust system, out of 1 1/2" schedule 80 pipe! He was a pipe fitter by trade. The muffler alone weighed 75 lbs!

For those comfortable with Reddit there's an entire subreddit for shop horror stories, usually with pictures:

I discovered Justrolloedintheshop a few months ago. I have noticed a similarity in the subject matter that I think comes from a younger group of posters who have not yet moved up to advanced level jobs. It is still fun to read but there are too many tire and wheel pictures.

Also, the amount of brake rotors worn down to the cooling vanes scares me.

How do you not notice lathe action coming from your wheel wells? Oh wait....... thump thump thump (gangsta rap sound effect), talking on cell phone while taking a hit off the crack pipe.

I got a kick out of someone from California posting a brake rotor that had a very minor patina of surface rust on it. 'This came from a car with 12,000 miles!'. People who haven't worked on cars from the rust belt are so cute. smiling smiley

My buddy wired his entire car with green solid-core house wire. Gauges, switch panel, fan, lights, ignition, etc.

had a 04 Forester come in last week, had a lot of positive camber on one of the rear wheels, turns out both sides had 10mm bolts in place of the 14mm bolts to correct camber and one side slipped the wrong way.

the best is that it had been done by "the most reputable Subaru alignment guy in the seattle area."

A buddy who works at a very high end shop told me of a little old lady with a classic Rolls, she kept coming back complaining of "runs rough, no power" after they had tuned it tits perfect. Finally he did a test drive with the owner driving; first thing she does is pull the choke lever and hang her purse from it.

Also know someone who opend up the oilcap and filled the block to the top with water in a Benz.

Ah California...

Rat City Rules!

I have an attorney with a 1963 Porsche 356 Super. First he seriously asks me if I can install air bags like in his new Mercedes. Then I discover that half of the car is wired with Romex and wire nuts. Rich white guys can be so fucking stupid!
