Is this a bad idea?
January 21, 2013 06:42PM
I'm re-working my fuel system - bringing it out from under the car - I've always been a bit sketched out about it being under there.

A friend of mine moded a stock Audi tank with AN fittings - he's going with a fuel cell, so I got the tank.

I was going to cut the floor out and build a box out of sheet metal, but as I was thinking about it I started thinking that the box may then become a target for rock shrapnel and become a bigger problem.

So, my thinking is, just set it in the trunk with the spare over it. Is this a bad idea?
(Wheel gets strapped down - doesn't move - and usually has a 2nd one on top of it - although given how short stages are these days, that'll change to 1 spare)

Note: I'll be building a support for the tire close to the gas tank, its currently resting on the box with the AN fittings coming out of the tank.

OE tank in OE location or a fuel cell with the associated isolation procedures. So basically yes it is a bad idea as it won't be allowed.

OE tank in OE location - why would it not be allowed?

Passenger compartment isolated vial bulkhead.

Does it need a box ?

If'n it is an OE tank in OE location, nothing can possibly go wrong...

What's the question encore une foi messire?

Question:
is placing fuel pumps under the spare tire, without a box a bad idea?

If I built a box, I would sink it below the current trunk floor, but wouldn't that then make it, the box, a target for flying shrapnel under the car?

Fuel tank is between strut towers in trunk compartment - it would take a pretty big impact to compromise it.

I didn't get what you were up to in the first post. Sounded as of you were putting a fuel tank under the spare. My mistake (or more likely your mistakesmoking smiley ). Fuel pumps are ok under spare.

Well I saw the pic and just thought it was parts in the trunk (it is an Audi..)

Would you then strap the tires in ? Seat belts or ratchet straps? If you had 2 spares I'd think seperate straps for the bottom and then top tire.

Any thickness of sheet metal that is thick enough, that a normal person would think would withstand rock 'shrapnel', will withstand rock shrapnel (like .030 steel). Unelss the noise bothers you, that won't be an issue. It's when people put roof flashing over something that it does not work! Your big worry with the sunken box is BIG rocks. I'd look at the location and judge if that will happen or if that BIG rock will likely smash something else critcal first. IMO

We did very similar with our old 90Q20V, though didn't mount the pump under the spare. We rain the feed line up through a grommet to a Walbro mounted horizontally at the rear of the trunk and built a brace/box around it. Worked great.

Here's a pic pre-boxing. Ignore the dogs breakfast of fittings leading into the pump. We were still proof-of-concepting with what was available in the garage at this point. The Pre-filter to the pump is because we pulled the strainer/sock from the inside of the tank. Had issues with them clogging up and causing starvation.

I know you said ignore the fittings, but wow, did you guys take apart the BBQ for parts or what?

Box welded to the bottom of the tank and a couple of 10 AN Male fittings.

Top has vent, that also has a valve that closes in case the car gets upside down.
