I did also suggest that the smartest thing would be to put Matt Johnston on the payroll instead.

Sustainable - From the sanctioning body/championship organizers point of view, the video production should be a fixed cost that they HAVE to pay in order to attract a higher level of competition THROUGH long term retention of competitors. Once you get that you MIGHT be able to generate some revenue from selling naming rights or commercial space and such, but you have to get the competitors first.

I got contacted by a producer from a network after the first rally we did. He wanted to recut the three episodes into a 23 minute show and broadcast it. I had to pay them initially but there would be revenue sharing if they were able to sell any commercial space for the show. The two problems at that time were that a) I couldn't afford the few thou to pay them and b) over half of the video was shot on a 2000 model Sony digital 8 handycam and thus nowhere NEAR their production standards.

$8k per year was a sustainable budget.
I don't beleive it is.

Ha! So, it's like this fictional dramatization:

G: I offered to do it for $8k. It was sustainable at that point.
M: No it wasn't.
G: Actually, yeah, based on what my previous costs were.
M: I don't believe you.
G: I already know what it cost last time.
M: Those are the wrong costs, and they don't factor in what's going to happen six years from now.
G: It wasn't a six year offer. I mean, I have done it before.
M: No you haven't.
G: You can see the videos. They're on youtube.
M: No they aren't.
G: Yeah, like here's one [url=

]right here.[/url]
M: I don't see it.
G: I don't know what else to say.
M: Yes, we're never going to agree on this. You may as well stop arguing with me.

In Keith's defense he probably has had a experience with the CARS production, is aware of what it costs the series and what the production house does at events and such.
Thanks Grant.
Yes, I have experience with what is being done with the CARS production - which has been on broadcast TV for almost all of the past two decades. Not only that but I do work as a freelance photographer, have worked as a photo editor and understand the freelance business all too well (from both sides of the equation.) Video is virtually identical to still photography - but pays better.

I can tell you what is different that makes us able to do it for less than others.
1) We own very little equipment we use and thus have almost no overhead.
2) We have a small core group and the rest are volunteers/day laborers essentially.
3) We have day jobs and are not trying to make a living or pay the bills with rally.
A great recipe for doing things on a low budget.

Low budget usually comes at a price, although quality isn't always that price.
(My experience has been that consistency and predictability is usually the price. I can sell myself as a mid-level pro photographer because I will almost always bring back something the client can use and will be happy with. High end photogs will always deliver gold. The vast majority of 'budget' photographers typically bring back something useable, but not reliably. IE: their best shots are not relevant and the important shots are iffy.)

Also, I should correct myself, I figured the minimum production we could do around $8k. But my exact message to them said, "$8-12k per event range."
Already a big difference in the pricing and getting closer to sustainable.

Meh...
I've seen grants work, knew he's done them and know he can do them for $8k.
Never said anything different.
I was questioning the sustainability - more important from a buyer's perspective than a supplier.
More important to have nothing, currently, than to concern ones self about sustainability?

Seriously though, they RA hasn't even put out an event review. But with all the crap that they have put out (i.e. not much) it's all focus on Ken/Diggins/L'Estage. At least the ACP thing on tractionizing was a nice little tech thing. Was funny because Bushore and I were talking to ACP before park expose and he was talking about how he broke his tractionizer the night before and I guess that was the moment it happened.

RA even linked Matt Johnson's weekend review article. I mean really? Take the content he wrote, put it to an over-dub and to video and you're done. You can pretty much write up a script for an event before the event happens and do a Mad-libs style fill in the blank with driver's names.

Bill Fogg Jr did say something about spending no money on media this year, so why is everyone surprised there is no RA-produced media?

Less for more!! They can't get scoring right, how do you expect them to get media coverage right?

It's amazing how RA can't get scoring right days after the event or put it into any readable format, yet at BRS last year I was getting text updates about bikes and front runners while transiting to stages.
