When I was travelling in Austria a few years back, a friend gave me a pair of cow hide clogs. They are amazingly comfortable, and hipster stylish. So Grant, they may be the perfect shoe for you.

Redwings. Have had mine forever. My last pair were cut off me by a paramedic when I got run over by a car, which was 25 years ago.

I think you guys are confusing scenester with hipster. Most "hipsters" are really scenesters and follow the trends. A true hipster is the anti-thesis of a scenester and does what they want but tend to be ahead of the trends. If you say "hipsters wear skinny jeans" or "hipsters ride fixies", then by definition it's no longer cool. Though I kinda wish I had a fixie because then at least I'd have a working system to stop on my bike other than putting my feet down. Gets a little sketchy riding one handed with a cup of tea when I have to stop these days...

You are very correct sir. As soon as PBR jumped a dollar per 6-pack, I switched to Hamms. Soon after I quit drinking, because it was getting too mainstream. I rarely ride a fixie nowadays. My commuter bike has a rack, big ol' fenders and pannier bags (still one speed). Though, in the summer I do bust out the Bamboo framed fixie. It has yet to be copied here. Well once, but then they cracked their frame in half, silly engineering students not using common sense ![]() I love Volvos, but those are becoming (or are) the new hipster car. What will I do! And John, those clogs in Austria were 40 euro. Free to me as they were a gift. But, they are some of the most comfortable things to wear around. Awkward to drive in, kind of like cycling shoes. |

Shit Volvos with no service are the hipster cars. Good Volvos are still almost undiscovered. And as for driving with clogs way back in the 70s one of the British rally magazines had a long article about visiting the Saab factory Competition department and going out with Stig Blomqvist and Per Eklund and blazing around and scaring the beejezuz outta the poor Pommie in the works 96s which he described in typical Pommie magazine detail....then later he said they arrived at where they're gonna take the works rally-cross cars out and he said to the effect, "Well this was another level of madness and I knew they were taking it a lot more seriously than they did in their jaunt in the forest cars because they sat down and took off their clogs and put on ordinary oxford shoes....." hmmmmmm. Most truckers in Northern Europe seemed to have been fans of clogs when I was there...maximum comfy... Hate fixies, and all the idiots that ride around here with them. Or maybe I am bitter because I get cocky and they toss me off... Glad they were fairly short lived here. But you are right on par with all the current bmx kids and the brakeless thing. NOt a fan myself, but hey... WHat do you need to make that bike stop? Its kinda what I do and my bike spares are marginally second to my subaru spares. Hell we can get you a cup holder to hold that tea. |

LMAO!!!
Clogs... who said you can't drive in clogs? That's like a chick saying women can't walk in heels. I may be indifferent having spent my first 10 years living in Denmark. Clogs are great, easy to slip on and off, comfy, but not great in the rain because they are afterall a sandal. Moving to Canada at the age of 10, I was excited to be in North America. The land of McCloud, Macmillian and Wife, Kojak, etc. My first time in the US my dad pointed out a pick-up truck with a rifle on a rack in the rear window. I really had landed in the wild wild West, so I thought. After the snow melted that first year, I decided to wear one of my many pairs of clogs to school. Guess what? They were made fun of because they were "high heels". I could only imagine what would have happened if I wore my ankle high boots with the inside zipper that were popular in Europe in the mid 70's, and they had heels too. Seems 10 years olds in Northern Europe were hipsters in the 70's. I mean we did after all listen to - dailymotion:x9gj4i#.URIBAeiSMqg]The Sweet and they were considered Hard Rock! My clogs went the way of the Raphus cucullatus (dodo) and quickly I amagamated to the mainstream with Adidas - Stan Smiths and Converse - Superstars. Damn I miss wearing clogs! (Sorry about the slight thread jack with a hefty amount of reminicing) Thanks for this thread Grant!!! I'm going clog shopping. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/06/2013 01:23AM by RWD4ME. |

Still under the radar for the most part here in the States. Super comfortable. "Talk about drugs. Real peasants wore a pair of 'sabot' virtually same as Squarehead tree-shoes... Came in real handy when big Capitalists bought mechainzed farming to the countryside and men knew their livilhood was threatened... That's the root of the word those guys did...just add "age". One shoe in the gears, clank grr bonk.....and 100 men had work. John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! As of the 13th century espadrilles were already used as footwear for the King of Aragon's footsoldiers. They were hand made, with soles of esparto or other grass rope. The uppers were of fabric woven from flax. Pitch was used to protect the undersides of the soles.
