I realize that this topic has absolutely nothing to do with rallying, but I trust the opinions of many of the people who post in this forum.
It's a well known fact that I have limited mechanical knowledge to contribute to the forum, little knowledge of suspensions, etc, etc... it seems that the majority of my posts are mere opinions, but a minority of my posts have been re. construction and building knowledge which I'm fairly well versed in. That said, I'm reacing out for opinions about diesels. Not for a rally application, but instead for a marine application. Does anyone have knowledge, preference for Cats or Cummins (mechanical of QSB "electronic" or Yanmar? I'm not honed in on any particular one but since I'm considering something in the 36' to 47' range it rules out MAN's, etc. It seems that many of the manufacturers departed from Hinos in the mid to late 1990's. Any knowledge or opinions would be greatly appreciated. |

I have tens of thousands of hrs boating with Detroit, Cummings, Yanmar, Westerbeak, Perkins and Pathfinder Diesels what do you want to know?
I really liked the Cummings and Yanmar motors I have experience with, no complaints about them, even when we did stupid things like let salt water find its way up the exaust to fill the turbo and cylinders up while sailing. Lots of fun to pull the injectors, purge the cylinders, change all the oil etc in 40 foot seas 1200 miles from land... suckers started right up and ran for many years more with out incident. Even the turbo was none the worse off after the salt water bath. Many of the motors are sold at several HP ratings, a de-rated motor tends to be longer lasting than a smaller one running at the top of its model's hp range. IE get the 250 HP motor of the family that runs from 250 to 350 hp rather than the 250 hp motor in the 175 -250 hp family. I good installation is important, the correct gearbox, prop, shaft, stuffing box, and exhaust routing are critical to getting the best out of the motor. Sound insulation and motor mounts are critical to enjoying the boating experience as is getting the shaft alignment right to keep vibration down. I remember one trip where we left Seattle, set the RPM to 2100 or 2200 RPM and 4 and a half days later powered back as we passed under the golden gate bridge. Vibration and noise will really get to you over 4 days. Fuel filters, water separators and proper tank vents also play a role. To run 4 days we needed to transfer fuel from tank to tank while not messing with the running of the boat. In the long run reality always wins. |

Not when you drive a crap pick up. Get a car, show us some results instead of just lip.. Then do it 20 years and then you'll get some respect. or just fuck off and go plague a pick up forum with your awesomeness. I assure you I neither seek nor desire your respect. I also make no claims that I am deserving of some great amount of respect. I don't have a giant fragile ego like you seem to have.
I love how pissed off my avatar makes you. The "just a wannabe" tagline somehow gets translated into all these assertions you project upon me. It's truly funny. I thought it was self deprecating and communicated my utter lack of status but apparently it's some giant assertion of awesomeness processed through your warped brain. Funny if most of the Volvos were not overly expensive rusted out hulks of their former selves out here my avatar would be a 240 but I gave up trying to find a good cheap one. I'm glad the truck gives your manic mind something to latch onto for easy insults though. Also way to prove you don't really care about contributing on topic super meaningful posts by making a bunch of off topic posts that don't contribute anything either. You, at times anyway, just care about being a dick. Keep taunting me all you want I'll still be around to call you a dick when you are being one. ![]()

What an abolute useless asshole you are, like a big --not grown up --version of the Yapping poodle.
Go look at your posts and the majority add nothing of humor, or insight, or anything except complaining and trolling. You think anybody including the OP cares if our friend spelled it Cummins or Cummings, ? That doesn't make any difference to anybody --except you. It's Dereks experience that matters.. You didn't have anything important to add---did you? Learn something: there's a difference between being an immature complainer asshole, and responding back to an asshole. And don't snivel when you are responded BACK to like you write. John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! So MrDerek, on that cruise to SF that you had me along for, what engine was installed at the time? I recall that you guys were pretty enthused about the swap that was gonna go down somewhere around that time. But I don't remember the details. My recollection of the amount of noise involved makes me think it had a detroit screamer, and y'all could not wait for the Cat that was gonna replace it... or did it have a cat and you couldn't wait for the Cummins?
