gopro mounts, what mounts do you want?
March 10, 2013 05:39PM
A friend works for Gopro and asked me what kind of mounts would be useful for rallycars. I have no experience here, anyone have burning desires?

Something with a standard tripod thread. The proprietary Go-Pro stuff is absurd.

The roll bar mount sucks because you only have the options of 90° bends. About the only mount i have seen that's actually worth a damn is the RAM mount with the proprietary GoPro mount on one of the balls. The window mounts are the same way, very difficult to actually get them pointed the absolute way you want them.

The other thing that sucks with the GoPro mounts is that when you finger tight them, they typically don't hold well to heavy shaking oyu get in a rally car. I always tighten them all down with a screwdriver.

The sliding clip mounts suck as well because the tolerance on them is just horrible. You can take the camera and shake it and feel the slop in the mount. I always end up shoving a folded piece of under the clip when I slide it in to take up the slop and make them rock solid.

They already make one:

Ram mounts are the way to go people. No need for ANY go-pro mounts other than their case. Yeah its not the cheapest but they are metal and quality pieces of gear.
http://www.rammount.com/Products/CameraMounts/tabid/109/Default.aspx#/wizard?Cameradevice=4&Cameradevice-1=1&Cameraarm=2&Cameramount=6

Example of what I have in the car. (multiply by 2 because I have 2 cameras)

And the suction cup mounts are the strongest I have ever seen. Unreal gripping force.
The balls have a rubber coating that the extension grips onto. They don't move at all even on the worst conditions. For example I had one camera setup with the 6" extension at PFR this year on princeton where we hit a BIG hole (or rock or other car for all I know) and the camera did not move.
Also with the ball mount, you have full adjustability in every direction you could ever want. just twist the wing nut on the arm and everything is locked in place.

That setup is the win. I got a RAM mount for my Drift HD and was all OMG this is awesome. I even have a RAM mount for the phone we use as the rally odo. I'm going to buy a few more RAM mounts for my GoPro stuff soon.

Another thing you don't see about the RAM mounts, they're metal. Not el-cheapo plastic junk. Good stuff!

I have the universal holder in my work truck, just use a standard dash mount with a standard 3" arm and its great. Very sturdy. I bought the suction mount as well. Great adaptability by being able to swap parts and application in seconds. BTW Keith there is a local dealer and they have had everything in stock when I walked in the door. I must give John Hall the credit as he is the one that introduced me to these pieces of gear.

If they made a cage mount that adjusts like their suction cup mount I would buy that. Something that can be positioned without 4 different arms. If you want a standard tripod mount they make an adapter for that.

I'm a big fan of mounts that use the 2 ball joints (like what the Ram product above uses).

Also, I get that they GoPro is trying to make money off of selling camera mounts, but it doesn’t make them user friendly and there for some people steer clear of them. It would be nice if they would get on the same boat as almost every other camera manufacturer out there and use the standard camera mount threading.

Wing nuts on the go pro brand stuff would be way better than the round twist thing they have now.. Something you can grip with gloves on... Maybe an arm that swivels in the center

I be sorry as a muthafucka I did, still sorry I did n' hustled ta peep what tha fuck I holla'd a lil' bit better, or at least try to.

Ram mounts are the heat.

I have them in my car, for phone or GPS or dash cam.

I have them on my motorcycle, for GPS or "bar cam" or "swing arm cam" or even the side view mirrors. Check those:
http://www.doubletakemirror.com/

I put some on a hard hat so I can make POV volunteer training videos in the future.

I even put one on my daughter's tricycle for sweet video action. For giggles, check this out, the whole video was shot with a cell phone and a ram mount on the bars:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=8B_efrUohFw

Given how universal they are, I can't see switching to another system, since my mix-and-match capability is so high. I mean, I can take off a side mirror and replace it with a GPS? Or a cell phone? Or a camera? What more could you ask for?

Whenever I use a GoPro I really find myself wishing for one thing. A Contour.
