Something something lumens.

That bulb is probably a CFL that is a 100 watt incandescent equivalent. Shooting outside ambient light is going to be a WHOLE BUNCH BRIGHTER than the inside light. To light up the inside to match the outside exposure, you'd need a sheet load of lights to match sunlight, even in Seattle. Without adding extra light to the garage (be it strobes for still or hot lights for video), either the inside is going to be dark, or JV's gonna look like a ghost. The dynamic range of film....errrrr, digital sensors...is more limited than the human eye and brain can process in real time.

Yeah, I worked for a commercial photographer many moons ago (and spent many hours on the phone with JV on the clock to the dismay of my boss).

Personally, I like the dim bulb better. If the shop were well lit looking, you would loose a lot of the effect. All the clutter and the endless abyss created by the darkness gives the picture character. It lends itself to some of the magic that happens in that shop. Saying without words, what you see here is but the tip of an iceberg.

I agree. It's also completely not necessary for an editorial photo to bring in the amount of light required to get an "even" exposure. One on him (if any) should be MORE than plenty. I personally would probably light it (one light, just subject), because I prefer lit to unlit.
