Turbo encabulator or muffler bearing.

Subaru. Inexpensive, and built to that price point.

I like my legacy, but I think it is a 150k mile car. Mine has 174k hard miles...
261,000 miles on my (2.2) 96 Impreza. Only motor problem was 1 dropped valve guide. Still gets 28 MPG back and forth to work. YMMV. Had a 241,000 91 Legacy before that (motor is still in my garage and I wouldn't hesitate to use it if needed).

Everybody missed the knipiction pin (never tried to spell it before). That's more likely than the muffler bearing.

Well, I can't say I'm nice to my cars...Matt probably still has nightmares about my old Merkur and NER rallycrosses.

As you and Matt know 2.2 is way better than the 2.5s. Especially the DOHC ones. I debated throwing a JDM 2.0 in my Legacy instead of doing headgaskets. The oil stopped leaking for a while, but I came up two quarts short again earlier this week. Grrrrr.

I wonder if Matt got his exhaust fixed yet...

He was working on it last night, and I think today.
That's why we replaced his 2.5 with a 2.2 last year.

Piston slap. It's what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.
