Suby, not rally... piston slap
March 18, 2013 10:15AM
Hey Suby folks,

My father has an '07 Forester, 2.5L 350,000kms....

Started making what sounds like a bit of perhaps piston slap noise in the cold. Apparently was going away once warm, but sometimes not. He says it could be the batteries in his hearing aids making it go away... winking smiley Mostly under load, not too loud, I can make it do in netural at just a really narror rpm window (about 2000-2400).

Should he be concerned? (His last vehical was a Pathfinder he managed 650,000 out of... he's a pilot, drives smooth)

Matt

Another common problem, with this sort of symptom, is a failing timing belt tensioner (which I THINK Gene is hinting at)

Essentially the hydraulic ram that puts the tension in the tensioner looses pressure when cold and allows it to flap back and forth, making the knocking sound, and then slowly comes up to pressure.

Hmmm.

Possible.

I did listen to it. It seems further back then the front cover, but I just used a stick to listen...

Not saying that it's not piston slap (could very well be). But, when the tensioners fail the belts usually break and then the valves get to meet Mr.Piston.
I just did a rebuild for my roommate and it ran him $800 in parts. We did the head work at my dads shop, so that was free. The cause was a bearing failure in the toothed idler pulley. Took out the timing belt going down the freeway. 94k mi on the odo...

Piston slap. It's what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.

Yup, the local Sube dealer just quoted a guy $300 to do his belt at 125,000 miles. I hit it closer to $800. They weren't doing the water pump or component kit. Assholes. I got the job anyway.

The dealer does that crap and then when the rest comes apart they claim not their fault and try to sell an engine or heads. Snakes.

I had the toothy idler come through the front cover last summer. Not fun at all.
It appears the new tensioner that went in was defective and quickly started to 'tap' away. (causing a hunting idle, methinks, because the knock sensor would pull the timing...)
My best guess is that if he noise goes away when warm, it probably isn't a rod. (happily corrected if I'm wrong)

I doubt you can diagnose tensioner vs. piston slap over the internet. Either is possible.

It's probably the fuel pump.

Turbo encabulator or muffler bearing.

Subaru. Inexpensive, and built to that price point.

I like my legacy, but I think it is a 150k mile car. Mine has 174k hard miles...

I think it's the grouting bushes...

He has a pretty good mech (non-dealer) that services their cars, he's going to have it looked at when he gets back.

I hope it's not too serious, as he loves the thing, and is hoping for another north of 500'er...

I wish I had more time when it was here, but oh well.

subaru engine codes
March 19, 2013 12:13PM
While we are on the subject of non-rally subaru issues. My wifes '06 outback has started throwing a cylinder 1 misfire (P0301) and Bank 1 Systems to Lean (P071) code intermittently recently. It goes away for a whiel after I clear it. Checked and fixed a potential air leak on the intake that may have been the culprit.

It's so common that just about everyone knows about relocating the knock sensor to the bellhousing after piston slap makes the adaptive timing control pull timing back to literally about 5btdc at low RPM, causing a horrible bog then the engine wakes up like you flipped a switch at ~2200.
