And the next few if I happen to get accepted to Alabama/Huntsville. Here's the breakdown of NASA, RA, and the places I've applied to go to grad school this year. Aside from the 100 AW thing there's this big ole swath of land in the middle of the US that just doesn't see rallies does it? Unless there's a big chunk of regionals that I'm just not aware of it looks like there will be very little in the way of spectating or volunteering this year... even less if everyone's predictions about RA going tits up come to pass.

Well, if RallyTN comes back at some point in the future, that's just 2.5h away.

Sandblast is 8h away.
RallyWV is 9.5h away.

There's also Mendocino, but that's just north of San Francisco, so that doesn't help you out much either.

You're also missing a few smaller rallies down in the southwest. But yeah, that's about right. The middle of the country, due to it's geography, doesn't have a lot of great curvy rally roads.

Grassroots rally. It's what I think about.

What are you going to grad school for?

Materials Science and/or engineering. And the next two weeks are going to pretty much decide which (if any) of the seven places I applied to that I will be attending.

If I don't get in anywhere I'm going to need to find work asap to move up my plans for a car (non rally) as my ex will more than likely be moving to St. Louis with our son within a year. And then the dreadful thought of possibly applying a third time to get into grad schools... meanwhile, I ain't getting any younger, ya know? cool smiley

I'm just going to say, that Oregon State University and Portland State University are very close to at least 4 rallies (OTR, Hood, Oly, and Mendo). They also have fantastic engineering programs (OSU for sure).
OSU has been great for me. I'm working on my last term or so on my MS in MechE right now. I have been lucky enough to play with race cars for most of undergrad and grad projects/thesis.

Well Robert, it looks like they accept applications for any term for MatSci PhD's... You wouldn't happen to know any cool people there that I could schmooze with to get an in for next semester if none of my current apps goes anywhere do you? smiling smiley

Talk with Bill Warnes or Brian Bay. Brian usually has about a million projects going. He is really heavy in FEA development, recently with shoe rubber. Bill Warnes is pretty cool as well, but I'm not sure what he has going on for research.
If you want to play with racecars (Formula SAE), talk with Dr. Robert Paasch.

Just go to MTU. LSPR in your backyard. Problem solved.

School of Mines in Colorado. Pikes peak, 5 event gravel hill climb series, 12 event or so rallycross, 800 acres test facility, 2 chump car races, 2 lemons, mountains, sun, ski, snow.
The materials girl I know got a job right out of grad school in or really close to six figures, but Houston based.

Or Rolla, aka Missouri University of Science and Technology, aka UMR, aka Missouri School of Mines.

30 minutes away from 100AW, and 1.5 hours from Perryville.

For spectating, CHCA > Stage rallies.
1. Unlimited = no cats, no restrictors.
2. Open spectating = no yellow tape
3. Single road, 6 runs per class per weekend, can drive/move between runs.
4. Can camp on side of road at most events.
5. Service at the start line. Most events can wander around and check stuff out then walk up and watch the start.
6. CHCA classes. Sportsman for example. Mostly 1970 muscle cars, "restrictions" on the class limit them to around 600-700 hp. They are required to run stock brakes and suspension. The guys driving them are mostly crazy. There's alot of big HP, poor handling cars. Plus open wheel, champ cars (like World of Outlaw looking things), stock cars, trucks, rally cars, and quads.

Colorado. Yesterday you could have driven 60 miles and rode some fresh powder in Summit county. Or you could have stayed in Denver where it was 70 and sunny. Tons of craft beer and breweries big and small, though I personally think the PNW creates better tasting wine, beer and food though.
If I was unattached and single, I'd look to Portland or Seattle personally. Oh wait, I did. I had an assistantship at PSU for MS in Statistics, but then found out that it wasn't guaranteed for any longer than the first semester (budget pending) and was only covering my tuition, health insurance and paying me $10k per year (not allowed to work elsewhere either.) Local grad school was quite cheap for instate so I ended up staying here. I am now on a research assistantship getting tuition paid and $27k living stipend. Washington probably has more chance of an assistantship if you care about that. Likely more engineering jobs in Seattle than Portland too.

Is that school in Iowa UNI or U-Iowa? Note that not only is the engineering program at U-Iowa quite strong, but we have the National Advanced Driving Simulator and this prof in psych who works with them and teaches the required course in human information processing and who also knows the local backroads that are fun. But, as to your actual thread-topic, yeah, it's like 100 AW is an oasis in a desert.

This is my second semester applying @ CSM. Its program seems very solid. Personally I don't care if I get a stipend that pays enough for tuition or an assistanceship but any place without funding isn't an option. I'm a McNair Scholar by virtue of having had no family member with a college degree and being dirt poor. I don't blame you for not wanting to stay around in a different program that didn't have funding they could give ya...

This is still a possibility for this year, and if my ex moves to St. Louis with our son this would become school numero uno for me.

Its University of Iowa. smiling smiley Human information processing hmm? Sounds neat. My app is in for a PhD in Chemistry. One of my former professors taught there for two years and said he really enjoyed it.
