Hooked on rallyX - so - questions
April 27, 2013 01:40PM
Short story - After a visit to the BCR Rallycross track in Maxwell, TX two weeks ago - I am hooked. I rented one of Brianne's cars, since my DD is currently setup for road racing (very stiff suspension), and that was all it took.

Durring the last two weeks (besides work), about all I've done is read up on this sport and think about what all I need to do to the old girl to make her rallyX ready in a month or two. Well that, and smile at how much better the car could be on our craptastic roads here as well after modifications.

So current config - starting point with (I think) relivent bits:

90 Corrado (was G60)
1.8T AWP motor with frankenturbo
02J transmission with LSD
Front solid motor mount, rear MK2 (vertical puck) mount with poly insert, trans solid rubber mount
Koni inserts with H&R race springs
Stock control arms, with TT inserst (solid rubber)
Stock lower front bar (to be removed - I think), Newspeed lower rear bar
Front and rear upper bars
Willwood 4 pots up front (no dust boots, sigh).

What I am planning / thinking:

1/4" 5052 skid plate (own construction) to protect the vitals up front
Posibly 3/16" UHMWPE past the rear subframe
195/60/15 Winterforce snow tires (on order - after convincing tirerack I was sane for ordering in the spring) on snowflakes
Compbrake top mounts

Suspension - Something taller, and softer, to work on gravel/soft dirt. And John V seems to be one of the few experts on this. And yes, I know it will cost a bit. I want to do it right the first time. smiling smiley

Thanks in advance!

Bryan

My personal opinion... Buy a beater for a couple hundred bucks and leave your little beauty be.

Of course now that I'm seeing how far away those two places are from each other, buy a beater near where the rallycrosses are and talk someone local into letting it live at their place. Or go in on a beater with someone local to events and let it live at their place and share the car.

Not exactly the information I was fishing for...

Honestly I didn't experience anything there that would be any rougher on the car than what I am used to throwing at it at other local tracks or dirt roads. Only one car there was trailered in (a beater - not road worthy), and the worst problem of the day was a broken CV joint. And no, the C is no beauty queen, as I buy or make parts instead of paint, etc. But it is resonably stong, reliable, and fast, and I know it inside out. Look, stuff breaks, and when it does I'll repair it.

I just want to prepare this car for a different environment, adding parts where needed, such as the skid plates to protect the underside parts (just in case) and stronger top mounts to keep it from punching through. I've done about as much internet reasearch as resonable, and now wanted some experienced feedback - especially on suspension choice.

I also plan to take some rally classes, and am already working with a local to set up a course on his property to improve myself, as I get that it is many times more driver than car, as in AutoX or HPE. But, car setup is still is quite important.

for rallyX, most cars seem to do pretty good with a slighty uprated suspension over stock. Think Bilstein HD's plus a slighty stiffer spring (I think vr6 stuff will jack the front end up too much). Stage rally suspesion is usually too stiff for rallyx to get the weight transfer that you need.

Another cool Okie who also refuses to show any respect for the one hard and fast rule we ask people to abide in: a full real name and real location.
Wonder why?

John - Sorry about the name thing, it didn't say full real name. Fixed!

Thanks KTuner for the reply.

I also have some H&R sports - my only concern about them is height. Instead of a 1" or so drop, shouldn't I want to go even or maybe up an inch or so from stock height to give a little more travel?

And reecers - good to know. I know the SCCA tried that a couple years ago, but they couldn't seem to secure a site other than at the Tulsa location - and then it stopped altogether from what I could tell.

Go with hds and stock springs or search for the recent thread with the Billie part numbers. Your corrado is too heavy - get an early a2 FTW.

I'd rather run a Corrado than a Golf. Golfs are too tippy IMO. You're limited by trying to not roll the car.

Actually, just get rid of all that VW stuff and go turbo Miata.

Ummm? What?

A Corrado and Golf are identical in every way other than the roofline. I doubt the center of gravity is more than 2mm or 3mm lower on a Corrado

Run whatever you want. It's cone squishing on grass, not WRC. Soft springs, Bilstein dampers (or at least NOT some VWVortex Hella Frush things that are one step down from a solid steel rod), Cooper Weathermaster tires (or something else with wide gaps in the tread blocks, think motocross bike tires). Go have fun. Of course, take this advice for what it's worth, I haven't run a rally-x in a decade, and when I did my car was usually the cause of the next SCCA rules bulletin (street licensed for this event?...OK, borrows friend's shop "repair" plate, you want an exhaust? welds cherry bomb to rocker panel...falls off on first run).

If you're going to do stage rally, then come back and talk about what you want to do, and then the RWD Jihad here will tell you to get a Merkur or Volvo 240 or Toiletta Commoda AE86 YO! or Nissan 240 and slap a SR20DEsomething in it. grinning smiley

A Corrado and Golf are identical in every way other than the roofline and really rare, and therefore exxpensive fenders/hood.foofy unimportant things that cost lots more and you can't find when you bang it up... That and shitty forward visibility.I doubt the center of gravity is more than 2mm or 3mm lower on a Corrado

Been around too many Corrados I have.. I wouldn't drive one, but some people think they're pretty.
There is certainly no advantage to the shell.

Yeah, cars like the Corrrrrrarrrrrrrrrrrrrrdo and the Scirocco are styling exercises that are less functional than the boxes they're based on and tougher to get body parts for. But for grass-o-cross, who freakin' cares? The shell is a big WHO CARES for that use. And since the Corrrrrrrarrrrrrrrdo is the kind of car that there are two or three of in every police impound lot in the country, parts really aren't THAT bad to find. Sometimes you even find "evidence" the police missed (got crack?)!

Dayum mang, I told you youse wuz smrat!

That's the type of "think ahead' thinking that goes a long way in the Rally World...

PS
Hey OP, notice that everybody is telling you what you should do without anybody asking you anything about the gross-o-crosses you do..??
Or what your course have for surface---or anything?

And you din't tell us either what speeds, surface, roughness etc..
Many are BORINGLY SLOW first/maybe second gear wank fests..
Some are pretty gawddamn YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW!

Bear in mind that whatever the case: weight transfer---and 3 minutes..

Any old shiit will last 3 minutes..
Fresh new shit--I mean like OEM quality stockishh but new will last 3 min.
