We just lost the Taylor Town stage for Nameless Performance Rally due to recce issues at Olympus last year. It seems there is a commercial gravel pit on the stage and it was open for business during recce. The posted speed limit was 10 mph and the people working there said several cars came thru at speed. We didn't hear about it until a week ago. The gravel pit owners were upset enough to deny usage of the property this year but not so irate that they tracked anyone down last year to tell about it.
Who is to blame? Don't have a name to point at, several are guilty I believe. 'We' should have had people on site to monitor the situation but just didn't think about it. Live and learn. Ron Barker has made amends with the owners and I believe we'll get the usage back next year. NOW HEAR THIS....we will have better control on recce for Nameless Persformance Rally. There will be quiet zones and a very controlled speed zone. Competitors will be told this and if I get a violator they will be sent home and forfeit their entry. We simply can't afford to piss off landowners because people are irresponsible. The amount of work put in by Ron Barker and others to get these stages, do route books is astonishing. It just takes one butt head and a careless moment to fark it up for everyone. Capiche?? |

I'm regularly astounded with speeds/behaviour on recce.
At last year's Rocky Mountain Rally I clearly stated in the recce directions exactly where (as in exact mileage into the transit) where one of our radar locations was going to be. I think it was 11 cars that were caught speeding more than 20% over the (absurdly low) speed limit. The point was that it was a small, and sensitive, community. I had one driver pay a speeding fine say 'it was worth every penny.' I should have excluded him on the spot but didn't see the path in the rule book at the time. (and I was rather stunned he actually said that.) All that said: rather than being punitive, in particularly sensitive areas it is better to put your manpower at the start of the section to remind people to go slow and put event signage out as a reminder to the competitors and a visible indication to the community/stakeholders that you are serious. Admittingly enough, I did "win" the dumbest recce speeding award at Cochrane last year. In my defence, I was going with the flow of traffic (I was at the end of a line of trucks) and they (Kurt and/or the Braun bros) were basically standing in front of the sign where the speed went back up again. I accept it was a stupid mistake, but I wasn't hauling ass through the reserve. I'm typically the one yelling at driver's to slow down, as I have no intentions of meaning to speed on recce. |

![]() I support any and all action against people violating the GRC's of our sport. I support suspension of future events as well. The same people that are the offenders, are -supprise supprise- the same ass hats that do stupid ass things on race day as well. The behaviour is not a one day "I just was not thinking". What it is about the US competetors that have such an aversion to Recce? I just don't get it. Intercom and electronics dude. www.zerodegreec.ca Edited 1 time(s). Ya know, for a person so full of exaggerated self-righteousness ---I am referring to your astoundingly stupid sending of dictionary definition of "defamation" in that outrageous PM you sent---you'd think if you were expecting to be taken seriously that you wouldn't twist the rather neutral, rather casual statement Jay made "would not hurt my feelings to just lose recce. Better that than the damn rally." where he nuanced it--gave it a clear context---but you respond with by painting as if he expressed "some aversion" to recce.. You don't get it because there isn't a widespead aversion..Most down here are new converts, most have very little experience, just like up there, most are consumers, just like there, and 99.8% are casual hobbyists, not real dedicated racers, so anything they can do to further the illusion that they are "real serious, just like the heroes " they watch on You-Tube. So extra time for volunteers is expended, extra time for competitors has to be found, the inanity of having to drive some civilian car is overlooked all so that 98% can drive down these wide open roads at average speeds no faster in actual speeds that 20 -25 years ago and many even slower---few people averaged 43 mph then...fewer still in the 30s... But hey they saw the "heroes" doing recce, everybody else says recce is vital, the loudest voices keep screaming "it's all about SAFETY!!!!! and since you and your peers in all certainty know nothing about the rise of recce in Italian and French events in the 60s (routes being declared open a month in advance, local police being more than happy to close roads with a moments notice so that the heroes of that time could practice each stage up to 10 times at speed) or the debates why amongst the best drivers in the whole world why some say NO, (The Scandinavian and Finnish drivers saying it was antithetical to the idea of real rally as a test of driving skill--as opposed to giving and receiving dictation)) why get upset and once again start slinging your insults around ? Do you always read malicious or evil intent into everything you read.? . If you learned to read better you might not get as angry as frequently and then write silly things and send absurd PMs full of insults. Did the schools up there go to hell 20 years ago like in some of the places down here that are similar? Don't make the mistake of confusing Jemba with time (really) for one pass as being the same as two pass, make your own notes, recce. The Jemba notes at Oregon were frustratingly inconsistent in a couple of areas. Ya know, an interesting thing happened around here when we adopted two pass, make your own notes, recce. Novices, in their first event, started finishing.
When I finished my first event as a driver - the last event that was 'blind' in the region - I was congratulated for being the first first-time driver to finish an event in a 'long time.' I got all my seat time from that event - an that can't be a bad thing can it? Ok, we still have the occasional newbie who doesn't make it to the end of their first event, but it is less common than before by a long shot. Double OK, I'm being all provincial and only looking at what's happening in my own back yard. Yup - 'cause that's what matters to me and that's where I know all of what's going on rather than just some select stats in isolation.
