Camping at service

Say I was a cheap bastard and didn't want to pay for a hotel. Could I just set up a tent or two at the service area and camp it out?

Usually I'm the one asking about camping. I actually reserved a room this year.

There are RV spots, but those are real RV spots and need reservations. Tent camping not sure about. Nothing at the casino that we're aware of.

I'm pretty sure there are some camp grounds and other places that have camping available listed on the accommodations page on the rally website.

Maybe I missed the part where you said what rally you're heading to...

Bottom line is that it will depend on the event - some events you definitely can't camp at service, some events you definitely can, some events you may need to be stealthy (or in an RV).

Or stealthy and just crawl UNDER say SRTUSA or VTSC semi rigs, and pull the sleepie bag over your head, don't even need a tent!

Get supery sneakie-ninja-like, sleep in the cabs of their semi rigs. Just wear lotsa Subie jackets and hats and brullies.

I've slept in my fair share of service areas, but I've never done it like that

The first rally I ever went to was the 1985 Olympus International. A couple college buddies and I drove down in my 1973 Chevy Blazer with no top on it. (It was 4th of July weekend, it was hot.) We show up at the Tyee Inn in Tumwater and get our spectator packs but we hadn't bothered getting any room reservations anywhere and there were no rooms available. Besides, we were broke college students. So we slept in the back of my topless Blazer in the parking lot of the Tyee Motor Inn. We drove out to the stages and spectated (that was back when you could spectate anywhere) and good lord did my truck get dusty inside!

No event, just hypothetical. Wondering how cheap I could hypothetically rally

I believe that year my family camped out on stage at the spectator area we were working. My friend and I hiked a bit up the road from where my dad parked the truck/camper and we slept in the middle of one of those little dead end roads

OOOOooooooooooOOOH! In that case yeah camp in the truck or van.
I did at Maine Summer National cause I got in at like 0100 and slept in the Suburban got up and beat everybody in Gp2 and all but 6-7 other cars...
Of course i had an unfair advantage in my car---I had been in the same car for 15 years by that point...Huge advantage.

Sleep IS over-rated....enough beer before and you'll sleep fine.

I camped out in my truck for Mt Hood rally last year, and I saw a few others doing the same. I didn't mind, can't say a hotel room adds to my rally enjoyment other than a shower feels good at the end of the event but how many keep the hotel for that last night anyway?
