I was a broke ass college kid when I got exposed to rallying, in fact Slocum crashed at our house for a week waiting for Bill to come down from Chicago to drive to Mexico after 100AW. Didn't get to do shit for 2-3 years, but once I graduated, started making money at a real job, I found a cheap car and started racing. So I wouldn't dismiss that segment entirely. |

Okay, so let's crowd fund a getting started in rally series. And by fund I mean intellectual material, not financial.
Let's lay out a format to start. Each video is maximum of 5 minutes in length. Each video should build on previous ones but also be able to stand alone. Where would video 1 begin? Vehicle purchase? Interior removal? Sound deadening removal? Shell prep options? Grant Hughes |

Now don't take this as a defense of Caswell, because it ain't, and don't take this as an attack on the original author of the quoted segment, because it ain't, but... Is that really any different than someone saying they had an 'overall win' at an event but not pointing out that with 'in the regional portion of the event'? Hey Anders! Hurry up on this one:
That guy in the pick up who John Reed caught in a few miles and was stuck behind for 10 miles is over on the still appropriately named SS.com complaining that he didn't win his big trophy.....I suggested it was a simple bookkeeping or admin thing to shift the class, and that it didn't affect the driving on the stages---but that his puttering along in his mighty 500 hp pick up holding up people DID, and now he's all butt hurt that he's so slow that--as it was pointed out---70 wheel horsepower Saabs stomped him badly.. So hurry and write that so he knows what to do! John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Shit, we put the cart in front of the horse again.
I guess instead of format or topics of a first episode we need to define target demographic. WHO do we want this video to be aimed at? I would say a beginning rally enthusiast. Maybe has done rallycross or even possibly spectated at a rally or two. Ideally would be a potential competitor, which to me means one of a few groups. 1) 19-24 with inherited level of wealth 2) Mid 20s-early 30s post college graduate that's always been a fan and ready to make next step. 3) Late 30-50s with growing children that want to get into the sport either because they've always been fans or want to have something to share with a teen son/daughter enthusiast. 4) 20-40 year old non-automotive business owner interested in a new hobby. 5) 20-40 year old automotive business owner interested in a new hobby. 6) Ex-action sports star There may be other groups, teenagers like Lengi, but honestly they're most likely to fall into one of these 5 groups before they build a rally car. Obviously, topics will vary massively between which group you are attempting to talk to. So, of this group, who would you aim to inform with a "Getting Started in Rally" video? Grant Hughes |

well it IS racing so you will always have the people who can (and will) spend money on inane things; and those who choose to be thrifty. Both can be very determined and good drivers.
For me, while an open class turbo turd would be nice (and id opt for a mistu personally unless Escort Cosworths were made again) its not just going to happen. Ever. Moving "up" requires money and almost exponentially so. But we live in the united states and there is no money in rally when you get down to it. To quote an old, crothcy local from the Idaho Rally this year "how are you supposed to watch the race? Its just "vroom! theres a car. wait. Vroom! theres a car. Wait."" Some people do have small time gigs or incentives from people, but who here doesnt loose money overall when they go to a rally? anyone actually come out ahead? Regarding FWD vs. RWD. well that debate transends all racing, forums, etc. And frankly, Nelson's BMW showed that rwd can be faster than AWD, and that its relative to the driver within reason. Mr. Hoche shows what cheap can do against big time cars, and Dan Rochrohr routinely beats up on much more powerful cars in his open lite. And from what i've seen... with my good eye! is that a lot of competitors don't really push it, and aren't terribly fast. You can compare how people drive and really start to see the differences. So just choose a car that will stay running First Rally: 2010 First RallyX: 2004 (a bunch) Driver (0), Co-Driver (7) Organizer (3), Volunteer (3) Cars Built (2.5), Engines Blown (2) Cages Built (0) # of rotations (3.5) Last Updated, Apr 9, 2023 |

You just have to spectate a rally to see how shallow the talent pool is. You just have to enter one to realize it's alot harder than it looks to actually be fast. Grant Hughes |

I had seen this recently which goes along pretty good with the "Getting Started" theme. WE probably need to do a better job on the club part though (or do the organizing LLC's for many of the rally's count as the clubs?).
Giveitdeath.com How to Get Started The focus should be on ex-action sports people (not all stars) downhill and free ride mountain biking are big, along with a bunch of ski resort sports. There are lots of people with blown knees etc out there. -KTurner Stomp down on the exhilarator and hold on to the wheel. |

I 100% agree. John and I had a big discussion on this based on my background in athletics... I also don't think that organizers and sanctioning body's roles are encouragement to join the sport. They are there to set rules, and as such, if they are expected to encourage entry, they will always be in conflict. The easiest way to get big numbers easily is less rules, and less rules in a lot of cases is not a good thing (safety, community relations etc). Edited 1 time(s).
