Ok, I was bored this morning and decided that exploring the local gravel roads would be a good idea. So I drove, found a trail, and went for it. The first trail was fun, bumpy, but not too bad, the surface was kinda like whoops. Next, I decided it would be cool to drift in a dirt parking lot. The car's babysitting, no fun, traction control, ABS, and Stability control came on. I spent like an hour trying to figure out how to pull the ABS fuses. The place where the fuses SHOULD be has nothing there. Not even a place to PUT a fuse, just a clear, plastic cover, so I just gave up on that. I found another trail, this one was bumpier and rougher. Super narrow, barely wide enough for one car. I thought it would be a good idea to floor it, I was like YEAH LETS GO COLIN MCRAE KEN BLOCK SEBASTIEN LOEB THEY DONT HAVE SHIT ON MEEE FTWYEEAAAAHTHISISAWESOME!!!!! (you know, since rally drivers do that) over a huge bump, but i didn't see that the bump turned into a dip then another HUGE bump. Bottomed out my suspension. I thought it was fine, so I kept going. Once I found the end of the trail, I found out that it was super narrow. I tried to 3 point turn to turn back, and I ripped the bumper almost all the way off. The car looked like this- ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us I spent about 10 minutes freaking out about how my parents would kill me. Next, I remembered David Higgins talking about fixing his bumper with a shoe lace. If it works for a $500,000 Blue Subaru, it should work for a $25,000 (when it was new) van. I found 2 shoe laces, poked holes in the bumper, and laced that bad boy up together. That was my first time ever fixing a car, baptism by fire. Now it looks like this- ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us **The holes in the bumper and dent in the hood were there before I drove it and my parents knew about them** I drove around to see if there was anything wrong, and the car is not leaking fluids, nothing seems wrong, there is no weird noises, everything is perfect. The funny thing is, the car was out of alignment before, it would pull to the right when accelerating, but now that's fixed LOL. The bumper is holding pretty strong, and I don't think there is anything mechanically wrong with the car. I have no flat tires, the shocks are fine, the only thing that's wrong is the bumper. I think the rally gods were on my side (beginners luck?). Here's the thing. In about 30 minutes, we are about to go on a 1.5 hour road trip to go shopping. And it's my parents car. Do you think the bumper will hold? Is it even worth telling my parents? The bumper was kinda fucked up before, so does that matter? Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 06/09/2013 11:47AM by LexusFman. |

First off..I've fixed similar damage to cars with zip ties and the like and it works fine. Most of that plastic is held on with little plastic rivets or push/pulls anyway. The under carriage is a bigger concern. Make sure the pan isn't smashed up against the pickup tube restricting oil flow.
Second...knock that shit off! Hikers, bikers, LEOs, and who knows what could have been out there. The rally gods have nothing to do with asinine stunts. Always take another car, always find a dead end road, clear it first, block it and remember the road is never really clear. |

I wasn't completely hauling ass, I was just going like 20 mph over a bump I should have gone 1 mph over. The road was far too narrow to really get going much over 15mph in most places. The 3 point turn is what I think was really what messed the bumper up. But yeah, no more back road shenanigans. I think I learned my lesson this time around.

Nah, man, the 3 point didn't do it, it was the hammered nose dive. Not that it matters. Do you happen to have a sister that drives? Get her to drive you to the store and when she pulls into a spot, make a huge noise, get out and when she's not looking, jump on the bumper. Then go all "Jeasus!!????! Look what you did!11!" Pimpin' ain't easy.... |

First things first, fess up to your stupidity though.
Seriously. The fact that you are a college kid and have to ask this question, I really hope you are pulling our legs. Your other posts on the forum would appear to be someone who is relatively thoughtful for their age. Now, if you're the kind of kid to take other people's property and wreck it and then not tell them, you might already be on the "our kid is a untrustworthy little shit" in which case, don't tell your parents as it doesn't matter. Your word is dirt to them. Carry on as normal, eventually they'll find out (like when it gets taken to the dealership) and it'll be status quo of them paying out of their pocket to fix your screwup. Now if you actually have a good relationship with your parents and you don't constantly do things like this, presumably they'd appreciate it if you were honest and told them. And you should pay to have it fixed properly, because that's what genuine, honest, responsible people do; own up to their mistakes and fix their wrongs. |

like this sell-eee-kah? Not driving a car like it was meant to be driven to keep it nice for the next owner is like not having sex with your girlfriend so her next boyfriend will enjoy her more. |

When I was 17 we were out driving around on some dirt roads in my 81 Subaru, mostly area where motocross and Jeep stuff play. Trying to climb big hills and the like. Driving along at 3 or so0 and make a wrong turn and am on a single track (like bike) and coming up to a hill. Turns out it's a BMX jump. We nosed straight down, fender, bumper, and three tires blown out. Immediately hauled ass back home and dropped off the car, loaded into an 81 Corolla wagon and went about our business.
I later told my parents that I was driving down a street with a known huge dip/drainage thing, I'd forgotten about it, and hit it at 30 mph. Don't know if they believed it, but it was enough damage and I couldn't fix tires. I'd say buy some zip ties, replace the shoe laces with the zip ties, tell your parents about it but maybe modify the story into a speed bump, curb, or parking block instead of being a hoonigan out in the woods. And hold off on the woods driving til you get your own car that if you had wrecked it wouldn't have resulted in being grounded the rest of the summer! Grant Hughes |
