For Olympus last year, I made up some maps that overlaid the 2012 version of Nahwatzel over various runnings of the Nahwatzel roads in the past. However, I ended up not have an opportunity to post them.
For your amusement, here they are - http://www.wildwestrally.net/oly/Nahwatzel2002DDQ.jpg http://www.wildwestrally.net/oly/Nahwatzel2002DDR.jpg http://www.wildwestrally.net/oly/Nahwatzel2002WBT.jpg http://www.wildwestrally.net/oly/Nahwatzel2002WEH.jpg http://www.wildwestrally.net/oly/Nahwatzel2004S.jpg http://www.wildwestrally.net/oly/Nahwatzel2004W.jpg http://www.wildwestrally.net/oly/Nahwatzel2005S.jpg http://www.wildwestrally.net/oly/Nahwatzel2005W.jpg http://www.wildwestrally.net/oly/Nahwatzel2005WCM.jpg http://www.wildwestrally.net/oly/Nahwatzel2007.jpg alan |

Ha! I was just digging through old rally maps of 86&87 olympus ..now there is a difference! Wish i had a way to get em scanned and posted but i dont have any way at the moment.
I have always been proud of the fact that nahwatzel is typically a beast (due to being my home town and home rally). At one point i had found it to be one of the longest stages in the world at that time..believe it was circa 2007. Olympus has been reclaimed! Now t.v. needs more rally coverage in general! I didn't realize that the WRC route included the Nahwatzel Lake and Dayton areas.
I have maps for the '85, '86 and '88 FIA Olympus Rallies (as well as route books and John Bellefleur's pace notes for '86 and '88). I don't have '87. If I get time over the weekend, I will overlay the FIA Olympus Nahwatzels as well as the 2013 Nameless Nahwatzels. alan |

I have 6/7/8. Im not positive how much was shared but they were all over in the area. 88 was the "high country" year. Moved up to high elevation around spider lake etc. But anyway they definitely ran a ton of stages in those events (40+/-) and many of those stages or parts have been used since in one part or opposite direction to keep it from being memorized from what i understand. And dont forget doo wop ran some of these same stages as well. I sadly do not have much for that info on hand. Not always possible to keep everything even though im a bit of a rally hoarder.

In 86 s.s.4 eels hill was in the east end of the area. 87 s.s.5 eels hill (different route) was again in east and north of same area. 88 has s.s.20/21(rpt as 27/28) matlock north and California rd in the west and north of that area as well. Maybe help ya save time locating the maps ya need to investigate. I also have the maps via my fathers simpson(greendiamond) map book he copied and plotted the routes on for our spectating purposes.

In '88, day 2 of the rally was run in the current Olympus/Nameless Rally area.
In the Nahwatzel Lake area, there was the "California Road" stage that ran reverse course for part of the Nameless Rally's Nahwatzel North stage and crossed Eels Hill Rd to end near Hwy 101 & Brockdale Road and "Matlock North" that ran inside the Nameless Rally's Cougar stage before joining it, running reverse course to the mainline. They also ran a very interesting variation on Taylor Towne that year. Another interesting thing is that, in 1988, the fine for speeding on recce ("pre-running" ) was $1000. alan Edited 1 time(s). I grew up 5 minutes from the casino right by t.towne store. Lil off topic but i was trying originally to put a date on the original olympus. Was it 85? I am interested in trying to get some stuff together for a anniversary if we get our name back in time. I was thinking some of us hoarders could display on a table some of the old stuff from the glory days. I have some vhs of the coverage from this era as well. I even have the old timetable wheels lol. I kinda grew up with the olympus i was 6 in 85 and have spectated and then volunteer and even was a stage captain at one point.
Edit: and if memory serves ..88 taylor stage was the mcguyver incident! Wonder if he ever lived that down..and i forget the year but jason priestly went agricultural on nahwatzel late 90's/ maybe 2k? In '85, it was observed for WRC status. The first Olympus Rally (as a stage rally) was in '73 as one of the original SCCA PRORALLY championship events. It switched to NARA/NARRA from '76 to '79.
If anyone has maps/route books for stages on the Nahwatzel Lake roads (or any of the other stages near Shelton) between '73 to '84 and '89 to '01, could you send me copies of the maps? alan Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/28/2013 04:26PM by tipo158. |

I just mean the w.r.c. era..we got robbed of our overall anniversary this year. But all grumbling aside..we rally on. I will see if my dad has any of the 89+ stuff by any chance.

I never knew it dated back to 60's or that it was a t.s.d.! From reading supplemental stuff..we need to hear from barker, forespring, nispel, mcquaid. They have been involved since well a long time! I know the 80's for sure. B.t.w. thanks to them(and others like you gene and alan) we have had tons of great rallys.

Naw, it was 1987, when it started at Golden Gardens. I was at that start with a friend who was a off duty cop.. My friend Rod Johnson from Issaquah was organising Pace Operations that year, with coupla my other friends Dave Dunn and Sam Bryan as the drivers and they had done the route checking of the whole route maybe 4-5 times .. Quite a route in those days: ---until the day before when Nagle told them "Thanks but we don't need you. bye" cause they had TV stars I remember Rod was adamant that he would not put on some foofy romper suit and helmet "Cause if we dress up like racers, these guys are play racer" and like most of Rods words of wisdom he was dead right.. The 2 vidiots both crashed-and knocked off the radio antenna----within 25 yards and were giggling like it was nothing. Rod cut up his scalp pretty good and in the next service in "down-town" Shelton he was really really pissed off. but he's a salty old dog so what's cracked skull and big cut or three in the scalp... The never answer question was who started Marku Alen down that SS before it was cleared? The mcguyver incident happened just past where i was on stage. Couldnt remember the year. Forgotten about the early start..yikes!
And i just got off the phone with pops and he said the collection of route books that was in Simpson /greendiamond archives has been lost or was taken home by the other guy who did the road use permits when he retired a couple years ago. Ranger Rick! Well we oughtter be able to track him down..prolly have his phone number somewhere cause he wadded his poor defenseless Datsun into a Rat-soon and I found him some fresh body parts down at John's Auto Wrecking on S93rd south of Oly airport...
