PPIHC spectating advice - when to line up?
June 29, 2013 08:48PM
Taking previous advice on here about spectating at the start line, but entrance opens at 3AM and we have no idea when to go to ensure parking at the reservoir...

Got to meet Allison Kern at fan fest in the tent, but Dave was deep in conversation and didn't get to introduce myself in person before the rain stopped long enough to dash to Chicago's... Then the Barcade...

Any advice is most appreciated!

Rabin

about the time you posted your question was probably about the time to line up

friend of mine who has been in the past was actually talking about this very thing earlier this evening and saying he got in line at 1:30 am and was so far at the end of the line that he didn't know if he was going to find a place to watch and ended up almost at the top and freezing his ass off all day

Thanks for mentioning that Merrilee. I checked in here right around midnight, saw that, and packed up and headed up the mountain. Got there around 1am - with only about 100 cars ahead of me.

Oddly enough, I ran into Rabin there in line. He was about 8 cars behind me.

My favorite spectating is on practice days. This year I left Denver about midnight and was second in line at toll gate. In the future, I'm just going earlier the night before and hanging out at the toll gate all night. Nice thing is you are off the mountain by 9:30 without traffic. You have to choose which classes to watch, though I only really care to watch Time Attack and Unlimited anyhow.

We camped at Glen Cove one year. That was great fun and an easy way to spectate and get to sleep in and get really shitfaced at 13000 feet. Tequila was not a good idea.

One of these years I want to hike up the mountain and camp on trail. There's a plethora of options for getting to the top. No traffic to contest on way down, but it will take you much longer.

A pair of friends bought two round trip tickets for the train. One for 10 am and one for 4 pm. They missed their return trip in the morning, but caught the later one. Not sure how well it worked for them though.

We scheduled daughter's 1st birthday party in Wyoming on Saturday a few months ago, not realizing the conflict so missed race day again this year.

Yeah, the practice day is probably the coolest time to check it out. It's been a while but when I was there there were no pit pass requirements (dunno if that is still the case).

Second piece of advice. Don't cross road when you hear a car coming.

I would've liked to've watched the practices, but I was in Denver on a business trip and couldn't get away. Also, I missed the Friday Expose downtown, which was kind of a bummer. Then I was scheduled into an 8am meeting in Denver this morning (Monday), which was kind of interesting since it took three hours to get off the mountain, and then another hour back to Denver. And of course I'd had no sleep.

Next time I go do this, I'm running it, dammit.

So, what's the cheapest car I can use to get my ass up to the top in a non-embarrassing fashion? Running my Golf would just be humiliating.

Hey, I'm a frenchie, sorta. 'Cept I'm actually from the South. Anyway, back off or I'll start making fun of your last name.

Dunno what the pricetag was. The radio station at the event was saying it was $1.5M for the car itself, and then they apparently came out a month early for testing. Also heard that they put their whole Le Mans budget into this.

They just did what they do so well: real professionalism..

Did they arrive with color coordinated semi- and hawk all sorts of cargo and swag?
Flood every forum with Press Releases For IMMEDIATE release?

They just built a car, tested it back home, did it right and showed the amateurish approach of glitz and hype just doesn't cut it.
Look at the time interval.
Allez Seb!
Allez France!

I fucking chuckle so much when I always read "FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE" on a press release. I can't even remember if I've read a US rally releated press release without those words at the top.

That's because it is a standard for press releases, not just hyped up rally related PR. (I think the Associated Press has a guide online somewhere)

You typically specify a date if there is an embargo or use ‘For Immediate Release’ to alert the news reporter if the PR can be used immediately.

As for the original topic, I think when I went to Pikes Peak in 2005 I drove up to devil's playground around 4:00am and got to jump the line since I had a media pass. There weren't many parking spaces left when I got up there.

From the video and photos I saw of the crowds, they looked larger this year. No doubt due to Loeb.
